February 12, 2022 | Softball
Payge Suggs went 5-of-9 with four RBI and two runs scored on the day.
Â
Game 1 – UMass 11, N.C. Central 5
Suggs went 4-for-5 in game one with three RBI and two runs scored to pace a UMass offense that racked up 12 hits with three players posting multi-hit games. The sophomore got the scoring going in the first with a RBI triple to bring home Bella Pantoja before following up an Abby Lamson RBI base hit with one of her own in the second inning to help build a 4-0 lead.
Â
The Minutewomen added four more on three hits and an error in the fourth inning to take an 8-0 advantage. Pantoja got the scoring started with a RBI before Suggs picked up her third on a RBI single up the middle. Kendra Allen added a run on a RBI groundout before Suggs came in to score on a passed ball.
Â
Kristina Day finished with two hits in the opening game of the day, including a solo home run in sixth after the Eagles brought in their first of the day to extend the game. Chloe Whittier added the 10th and final run on a RBI triple to make it 10-1.
Â
Grace Cadden recorded a pair of hits in her first collegiate start while in the circle, fellow freshman Julianne Bolton picked up her first collegiate win as she struck out eight in a complete game effort.
Â
Game 2 – USC Upstate 2, UMass 1 (8 inn.)
The Minutewomen led 1-0 for the first five and a half innings before the Spartans tied things up in the bottom of the sixth inning after consecutive doubles led to their first run of the contest. USC Upstate secured the win in the bottom of the eighth inning after bringing in the international tiebreak runner from second to make it 2-1.
Â
UMass plated its only run of the nightcap in the top of the third inning after Abby Packard started the inning with a leadoff walk before advancing to second on a wild pitch. Pantoja followed with the first UMass hit of the game to put runners at the corner for Suggs, who came up with a RBI single through the left side to put the Minutewomen ahead 1-0.
Â
Whittier led the UMass offense with a pair of hits on four trips to the plate as the Minutewomen finished with six hits to the Spartans' seven.
Â
Jessie DiPasquale tossed all seven innings for the Minutewomen and struck out four while surrendering one earned run.
