Massachusetts Men’s Lacrosse Edged By #11/10 Army West Point In Opener

Kevin Tobin led UMass with four points, Liljeberg and O’Leary log hat tricks in the setback.

WEST POINT, N.Y. – After trailing by as many as five goals, University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse outscored #11/10 Army West Point 4-1 in the third quarter to head into the fourth tied at 10, but the Black Knights held on to defeat UMass, 14-13 in the teams' season opener on Saturday at Michie Stadium.
 
Graduate student Kevin Tobin led the Gorillas with four points on the afternoon, registering a pair of goals and a pair of assists. Graduate student Logan Liljeberg had a hat trick in his UMass debut and collected two groundballs and a caused turnover. Sophomore Shane O'Leary also logged a hat trick, potting his first three goals of his collegiate career. Senior Anthony Sericolo chipped in three points with two goals and an assist and grabbed three groundballs in his debut with the Maroon & White and graduate student Chris Connolly had a goal and two assists, two groundballs and two caused turnovers in his first game back from injury.
 
Caleb Hammett won 12 of 20 faceoffs and logged 10 groundballs to help UMass pull back within striking distance of Army after the Gorillas trailed the Black Knights 6-2 with less than 4 minutes to play in the opening quarter. Massachusetts outscored Army 8-4 through the second and third quarters before the Black Knights put up four goals to UMass' three in the final stanza to hold on for the win.
 
Junior goalie Matt Knote registered eight saves and Massachusetts led the Black Knights in both shots, 46-28, and shots on goal 31-22. UMass led in groundballs, 32-30, and Army had 17 turnovers to the Gorillas' nine. In man-up situations, Massachusetts went 1-for-4 and the Black Knights were 3-for-5.
 
Brandon Nichtern had a game-high eight points (5g, 3a) for Army with three groundballs and a caused turnover. Black Knights' goalie Wyatt Shupler finished with 18 saves.
 
UMass will be back in action next Saturday, February 19, when the Gorillas will host UMass Lowell at Garber Field for their home opener at 1 p.m.
