Massachusetts Men's Lacrosse Downs UMass Lowell, 19-9 In Home Opener

The Tobin brothers combined for 10 points in the win for UMass.
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse trailed 2-0 at the start but outscored UMass Lowell 19-7 the rest of the way to roll to a 19-9 victory in the team's home opener on Saturday at Garber Field. The win moves UMass to 1-1 on the season, while the River Hawks fall to 0-2.
Thirteen different Gorillas logged points in the victory, led by the Tobin brothers who put up five points apiece as Mike recorded a hat trick and two assists and Kevin chipped in two goals and three assists. James Caddigan had a four-point day with two goals and two assists, Gabriel Procyk contributed a hat trick and Chris Connolly added two goals and an assist. It marked the largest margin of victory for Massachusetts since the Gorillas defeated Utah 16-2 on March 17, 2019.
Caleb Hammett led UMass, winning 13 of 20 faceoffs and registered 10 groundballs. Sam Eisenstadt contributed 4 caused turnovers for Massachusetts and Matt Knote made 12 saves before being relieved by Dom Elmo and Tyler Bluse.
The Gorillas out-shot the River Hawks, 56-40 and led in shots on goal, 35-22. Massachusetts nearly doubled up UMass Lowell in groundballs, 40-24, and the River Hawks had 19 turnovers to UMass' 14.
Massachusetts made the most of its man-up chances, going 7-for-8 on the day, while limiting UMass Lowell to a 2-for-7 clip.
Jake Davis and Domenic Giachello combined for five of the River Hawks' goals in the contest, with three and two, respectively. Paul Macrina started in goal for UMass Lowell and made nine stops before being relieved by Calvin Desmariais, who finished with seven saves.
UMass will be back in action next Saturday, February 26, when the squad will travel to Boston University for a 1 p.m. matchup with the Terriers.
