Smith’s Walk-Off Homer Highlights Softball’s Opening Day Split

Amy Smith hit a two-out, two-run walk-off home run to send UMass to a 3-2 win over N.C. Central.
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Amy Smith hit a two-out, two-run walk-off homer to help the UMass softball team pick up a doubleheader split on opening day at the Spartan Classic at Cyrill Stadium. The Minutewomen split a pair of games on the day as they opened the 2022 campaign with a 3-2 win over N.C. Central before falling to host USC Upstate, 10-2.
Game 1 – UMass 3, North Carolina Central 2
Both teams hit two-out, two-run home runs in their final trips to the plate in the opening game of the season for both squads. Jessie DiPasquale went the distance in the circle for the Minutewomen, striking out 10 batters and allowing just three hits in seven innings of work. The Eagles scored their only runs of the afternoon on a Jaidyn Hamby two-run homer with two down in the top of the seventh to take a 2-1 lead.
UMass was down to its final out in the bottom of the seventh frame before Kristina Day singled up the middle to bring up Smith. Smith came away with a two-run home run to center field to score Day and give the Minutewomen a 3-2 walk-off win.
Kendra Allen opened the scoring in the bottom of the third inning with a home run of her own, a solo shot to center field for the first run of the season. Chloe Whittier added two hits for a Minutewoman squad that finished with eight hits in the contest.
Game 2 – USC Upstate 10, UMass 2 (5 inn.)
USC Upstate finished the final game of the afternoon with 12 hits, including three home runs to come away with a 10-2 win over UMass. Whittier hit her first collegiate home run in the fourth inning to help her finish her day 3-for-4 at the plate.
The Spartans struck first in the bottom half of the opening inning with a Peyton Darnell three-run home run before bringing in two runs on four hits in the third to go up 5-0.
Jules Shields opened a two run fourth inning for the Minutewomen with a leadoff double before being brought home on an Abby Packard sacrifice fly for the first UMass run of the game. Whittier followed the very next at-bat with a solo homer to left center field to make the score 5-2.
USC Upstate added three in the bottom half of the fourth with the help of another Darnell home run before bringing in two in the bottom half of the third to end the ballgame.
The Minutewomen continue action at the Spartan Classic tomorrow at 3 p.m. with a doubleheader against N.C. Central and USC Upstate.
