August 23, 2021 | Women's Soccer
Junior Lauren Smida scored in the 83rd-minute for the Minutewomen.
NEWTON, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts women's soccer team fell 3-1 to Boston College on Monday afternoon at the Newton Campus Soccer Field. Junior Lauren Smida helped the Minutewomen pull within a goal with under 10 minutes remaining before the Eagles scored their third goal in the 88th-minute.
Smida's goal came after a flurry of UMass shots following a goal from BC's Ella Richards in the 79th-minute that put the Eagles ahead by two. Lauren Bonavita fired a shot on target to force a BC save moments after the Eagles pulled ahead by a pair before Smida followed up her own shot off the crossbar to find the top left corner of goal.
The UMass offense finished the afternoon with 14 shot attempts, including 12 in the second half with five of those attempts finding the target. Smida and Bonavita each attempted five with Bonavita finding the target twice on her five attempts.
UMass goalkeeper Bella Mendoza came up with nine saves, stopping four on 10 BC shots in the opening 45 minutes before recording five more saves in the second half.
The Minutewomen return to action on Thursday for the home opener at Rudd Field against UMass Lowell at 4 p.m.
