May 08, 2021 | Softball
Jules Shields led the offense with five hits on the day while Jessie DiPasquale held Rhode Island to one hit in game two.
Game One – UMass 13, Rhode Island 7
UMass came back from down four runs in game one after Rhode Island plated four runs with two outs in the third inning to pull ahead 5-1. Kendra Allen got the comeback going in the bottom of the third with a RBI double to right center followed by Shields' RBI double that cut the deficit down to just two runs. Shields opened the series with three hits in five trips to the plate to go along with three RBI and three runs scored.
Caroline Deem tied it up at 5-5 with her two-RBI single up the middle before UMass took its first lead of the contest on an Alyssa Lyon RBI to bring the score to 6-5.
After Rhode Island tied it up at 6-6, Hannah Bunker drove in two of her three RBI in game one with a single up the middle while Lyon drove in another run to put UMass ahead 9-6.
Shields added two more in the fifth inning with a two-RBI double to the gap in right center field to stretch the lead to four while Bunker and Caroline Videtto each drove in a run to bring the score to a 13-7 final. Videtto finished game one a perfect 3-of-3 at the plate with two RBI and a walk.
Game Two – UMass 9, Rhode Island 0 (5 inn.)
DiPasquale tossed 5.0 innings of one-hit softball as she picked up her 13th win of the season in the circle. The sophomore held a no-hitter until the fourth inning.
The UMass offense provided all the cushion needed as they brought home seven runs in the first two innings of game two. Shields opened up the scoring in the first with a RBI single through the left side to bring in Payge Suggs for one of her two runs scored in game two. Suggs also added a pair of hits to finish with four in the doubleheader to go along with a pair of RBI.
The Minutewomen exploded for seven runs in the second inning highlighted by back-to-back home runs by Allen and Amy Smith. Suggs opened the seven-run inning with a RBI double before Allen and Smith sent consecutive pitches out of the ballpark to put UMass up 5-0. Videtto capped off the inning with a two-RBI single to center field.
UMass added two more runs in the fourth inning to bring the score to a 9-0 final, starting with a Bunker run after a URI throwing error following a pick-off attempt at third base before Suggs drove in another run on a RBI groundout.
The Minutewomen and the Rams wrap up the four-game series tomorrow at noon on ESPN+.
