Second Half Offense Spearheads Men’s Lacrosse Win At Fairfield
April 24, 2021 | Men's Lacrosse
UMass scores its most goals in a game since the 2001 season during the 21-14 win over the Stags
FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Eleven different players scored at least once and Massachusetts men's lacrosse recorded its most goals in a single game since the 2001 season as UMass won, 21-14, at Fairfield's Rafferty Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The 21 goals marked the most in one contest for Massachusetts since a 23-2 victory over Boston College on March 21, 2001. The 11 goal scorers were the most in one game for UMass since an 18-5 victory over Quinnipiac on March 10, 2015, when the team had as many different players tally.
Senior midfielder and attack Kevin Tobin totaled a career-best nine points against Fairfield via three goals and six assists. It was the most point by a Minuteman since Kyle Smith notched nine (six goals, three assists) in a 16-8 win over Delaware on April 26, 2013.
Tobin also reached a career milestone during the win as he eclipsed 100 career points. Tobin is the 44th member of the program to join the UMass Men's Lacrosse 100-Point Club and he did so on 49 goals and 51 assists. His nine-point outing gave him 105 points for his career, which moved him into 41st on the list. With Tobin now above 100 career points, Massachusetts has a pair of midfielder in triple-digits for the first time in team history (Jeff Trainor - 144 points).
Junior attack Gabriel Procyk led the team with a single-game career-high six goals and provided an assist as well. Graduate student midfielder Billy Philpott added five points via three goals and two assists.
Three players had three points apiece in freshman attack Dillon Arrant, sophomore midfielder Zack Kearney and graduate student midfielder Devin Spencer. Arrant and Kearney posted a goal and two assists each while Spencer scored twice and dished an assist.
Six more Minutemen registered one point each, including three long-pole goals. Close defenseman Adam Towey and long-stick midfielder Matt Weigand recorded their first collegiate goals while sophomore long-stick midfielder Jake Dulac tallied his second. Sophomore faceoff specialist Zack Hochman and sophomore midfielder Mike Tobin also scored once each while Trainor handed out an assist.
Hochman won 18 of his 33 faceoffs and grabbed nine groundballs in addition to his goal. Freshman Ryan Henry went 3-of-5 with a groundball in relief of Hochman.
After the Stags rallied to within one of tying, 12-11, with three minutes, 47 seconds to go in the third quarter, Massachusetts rattled off eight of the next nine goals spanning nearly 15 minutes of game action. Procyk recorded three of those eight while Kevin Tobin added two in that span as well.
Procyk's 20th goal of the year bumped the advantage to 14-11 in the waning seconds of the third quarter. Philpott orchestrated the play with a roll-dodge in which he turned over his right shoulder and sent Stags' midfielder Taylor Strough sprawling to the turf. Two additional Fairfield defenders collapsed on Philpott, which left Procyk alone at the right post for the tally.
After the Stags opened scoring in the fourth with a goal only 33 seconds in, the UMass defense clamped down for 10 minutes of shutout play. On the other end, Massachusetts pumped in six consecutive goals to turn the two-score lead to a 20-12 advantage.
Spencer provided a highlight reel-worthy play during the six-goal run as he cleanly fielded a Kevin Tobin cross-crease overhead pass and shoveled in a underhand, back-hand shot for the 16-12 lead with 11:57 to go.
Massachusetts led in shots, 45-43, on-target attempts, 33-21 and groundballs, 42-24, while Fairfield committed more turnovers, 17-15.
UMass (4-4 overall, 4-3 CAA) concludes the regular season at Delaware (9-2, 6-1 CAA) on Fri., April 30. First faceoff is set at 5 p.m.
