UMass Men's Lacrosse |
Been A While
- UMass men's lacrosse ended a 368-day streak between games played when it defeated Fairfield, 13-9 on Sun., March 14.
- This is the longest gap between games in program history, which dates back to 1954.
- Massachusetts last started a season on or after March 14 in 1995 when it opened at No. 1 Virginia on March 19.
- The 1995 season was current 27th-year head coach Greg Cannella's first at the helm of the program.
Rolling Squad Deep
- Massachusetts began the season with 49 student-athletes on its roster.
- The 49 student-athletes represent the largest roster in program history.
- It includes six graduate students, seven seniors, nine juniors, 13 sophomores and 14 freshmen.
Locked Down
- Massachusetts only allowed two man-up goals during 13 opportunities through the first four games of the season, which equates to a .846 penalty kill percentage.
- It ranks UMass third in the nation for man-down defense and first in the CAA.
- On the opposite end, Massachusetts is 14th in the nation for man-up offense with goals on six of 14 opportunities (.429).
Doing The Family Proud
- Graduate student midfielder and attack Devin Spencer leads UMass with 16 points through four games. He has four goals and a team-best 12 assists.
- Spencer's 12 assists are only one shy of his single-season career best of 13 dished during the 15-game 2019 season. He posted a single-game best of six points (two goals, four assists) at Hofstra on March 30, 2021.
- Spencer is the younger brother of Ben Spencer (2016-19), who also played for Massachusetts, and is the son of Ted Spencer, a UMass letterman in 1985 and 1986.
More Than A FOGO
- Zack Hochman scored his first collegiate goal in the 13-9 win over Fairfield, doing so with 3:49 to play in the second quarter. Hochman's goal put UMass in front, 5-4, only 11 seconds after Gabriel Procyk tied it at 4-all. In addition to his goal, Hochman went 12-of-21 (.571) on faceoffs, grabbed 12 groundballs and caused a turnover.
- Hochman followed with his second collegiate goal during the 13-7 win over Drexel on March 20.
- He made it three consecutive games with a point when he doled out an assist in the game at No. 19 UAlbany on March 23.
Knote In His House
- Matt Knote made a career-high 21 saves in the 13-7 victory over Drexel on March 20, 2021, four more than his prior one-game best.
- Knote is the latest goalie to make 21 saves as then-senior Sean Sconone had that total in a win over Fairfield on April 20, 2019. Prior to that, the last UMass goalie to have as many was Doc Schneider when he made 21 stops in a 7-6 overtime victory at Hobart on April 11, 2009.
