UMass drops tightly-contested game at Vidas Field
PHILADELPHIA – University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse battled back and forth with Drexel before UMass ultimately fell to the Dragons, 12-11, at Vidas Field on Saturday. The game featured four lead changes and seven tie scores before Drexel pulled away late for the win. The victory improved the Dragons to 4-2 overall and 2-2 in CAA while Massachusetts dropped to 3-2 on the year and 3-1 in league play.
Junior attack Gabriel Procyk led Massachusetts with three goals while graduate students Billy Philpott and Devin Spencer chipped in three points a piece. Philpott did so on two goals and an assist while Spencer scored once and helped on two more tallies.
Graduate student midfielder Jeff Trainor potted a pair while sophomore midfielder Mike Tobin added two points via a goal and assist. Sophomore faceoff specialist Zack Hochman and senior attack Clayton Proctor scored once each as well. Hochman also won 15 of the 26 faceoffs and grabbed a game-high eight groundballs.
Sophomore goalie Matt Knote took the loss between the pipes with nine saves made. His counterpart, Ross Blumenthal, picked up the win with eight stops.
Sean Donnelly led the Dragons with eight points via two goals and six assists. Aidan Coll added a hat trick while Zach Augustine, Ryan Genord and Luke Tomak each scored twice.
The sides combined for nearly as many goals in the fourth quarter (11) as they scored total during the first three frames (12). Neither led by more than a goal until the Dragons opened the fourth with back-to-back strikes and snapped a 6-all game. Jack Mulcahy scored one-handed only 32 seconds into the frame before Augustine converted during a man-up play with 11 minutes, 55 seconds to play. Augustine's put the Dragons ahead, 8-6.
Massachusetts sliced its deficit back to one after Matt Caddigan stepped into a Drexel passing lane to caused a turnover and Procyk converted on the opposite end. Procyk scooped a loose ball near the right pipe and fired in a low-to-low strike with 9:50 to go.
It took UMass only 80 more seconds to get back to even. Philpott dodged to his right, spun off his defender over his right shoulder and fired it by Blumenthal to knot it at eight with 8:30 left.
The Dragons used another two-goal run to push the lead to 10-8 as Donnelly and Coll put in a pair at the 7:07 and 5:01 marks, respectively.
Mike Tobin moved Massachusetts within one in the final two minutes on a feed from his older brother, Kevin Tobin. However, UMass was forced to employ an antagonistic defense in the hopes of causing a turnover after the ensuing faceoff battle went Drexel's way, and Genord converted on an open net only 21 seconds later.
Massachusetts was able to get two back in the last minute of play but ran out of time before it could generate the equalizer.
A Ryan Fitzpatrick caused turnover on Donnelly led to Spencer's goal with 13 seconds to play. Hochman won the ensuing faceoff on a violation and Procyk netted the man-up tally with three second to play. However, in need of one more possession, Massachusetts wasn't able to secure the final faceoff of the game as time ran out on the comeback effort.
Drexel led in shots, 38-36, and on-target attempts, 21-19. The Dragons also held a slim margin in groundballs, 28-26, while Massachusetts committed 21 turnovers to 14 by Drexel. UMass scored on three of its six man-up chances while Drexel went 2-for-3.
