Six score multiple goals as Massachusetts wins third CAA game of the season
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse disbursed its season-high 16 goals across eight different scorers as the Minutemen downed Hofstra, 16-10 on the road at Shuart Stadium on Tuesday. The win improved Massachusetts to 3-1 overall and 3-0 in the CAA while the Pride dipped to 4-2 on the year and 1-1 in CAA games.
Devin Spencer led Massachusetts with a career-high six points on two goals and four assists while Gabriel Procyk added four goals and helped out on another tally for a five-point afternoon. It marked Procyk's third hat trick of the season and Spencer's second consecutive game with four assists.
Rookie attack Dillon Arrant notched three goals and dished out an assist for Arrant's third consecutive hat trick and fourth consecutive multi-score game. Billy Philpott also posted four points and did so via two goals and as many assists while Kevin Tobin scored twice and helped on another tally. Ryan Fitzpatrick, Clayton Proctor and Mike Tobin provide one goal apiece.
Matt Knote stopped 13 Pride shots in the win. Six Minutemen caused Hofstra turnovers with one each by Grant Breyo, Matt Caddigan, Jake Dulac, Matthew Hill, Spencer and Adam Towey.
Justin Lynskey led the Pride with five points on two goals and three assists. Three more from Hofstra scored twice apiece in Colton Rudd, Justin Sykes and Ryan Tierney.
Massachusetts broke open a five goal lead at halftime due in-part to a four-score run that closed the opening half. Two from Procyk and one each by Arrant and Spencer comprised the run and put the Minutemen up 9-4 at the break. Hofstra had the opportunity to generate momentum heading into halftime with a last-second goal; however, Knote calmly turned aside Sykes' look from approximately eight yards out.
Hofstra pulled no closer than within three of tying the remainder of the game as Massachusetts offset Tierney and the Pride's second half scoring with balanced production of its own.
The Pride moved within 10-7 of the Minutemen with nearly 10 minutes to go in the third before Massachusetts' transition play sparked a run that bumped the lead back to five. Knote turned aside a Riley Forte shot, the defense pushed the ball upfield and Jeff Trainor found Procyk open at the right post only 10 seconds later for the 11th UMass goal. After Rudd cut it back to three, Mike Tobin and Fitzpatrick netted back-to-back goals to pad the advantage heading to the fourth. It was Fitzpatrick's first in his career.
After being held without a point through three quarters, Tierney settled in and scored twice to pull the Pride back within three. His second of the game - and 30th of the season - cut it to 13-10 UMass with 8:23 to go, but it was the final Hofstra tally on the day. The UMass defense locked down and limited the Pride to just one more on-target shot while it forced Hofstra into three turnovers in their final five possessions.
UMass continues its season with a road trip to Drexel (3-2, 1-2 CAA) on Sat., April 3 for a Noon-time first faceoff with the Dragons at Vidas Field.
