THE OPENING TIP: THE MASSACHUSETTS-LA SALLE PREVIEW
• UMass women's basketball hits the halfway point of a four-game homestand on Sunday as the Minutewomen welcome La Salle to the Mullins Center. Opening tip is scheduled for 1 p.m., with Jay Burnham (PxP) and Kayla Burton (color) on the ESPN+ call.
• In conjunction with the program's annual "Lace Up 4 Pediatric Cancer" game, the Minutewomen will be wearing yellow shoelaces during Sunday's game. The initiative is sponsored by the Go4theGoal Foundation, a non-profit which provides supportive services to children battling cancer and their families. For more information, visit Go4theGoal.org or follow @Go4theGoal on Twitter.
• This is the second meeting with La Salle this season, following a 78-61 Massachusetts victory on Jan. 3 down in Philadelphia. Junior Destiney Philoxy was the catalyst for UMass that day, handing out 10 assists, while senior Sam Breen poured in a double-double with game-highs of 25 points and 13 rebounds.
• The Minutewomen are looking to bounce back from a pair of setbacks at Saint Louis (Jan. 24) and here in Amherst vs. Saint Joseph's (Jan. 29). Most recently vs. the Hawks, the teams kept within two possessions well into the game but St. Joe's used a 15-4 fourth quarter run to pull away in a 76-69 result.
• Massachusetts had four players score in double figures despite Friday's loss, including a double-double performance from Breen (17 points, 10 rebounds). Philoxy (15), plus sophomore Sydney Taylor (13) and freshman Ber'Nyah Mayo (13) added double-figures as well.
• Graduate student Maddie Sims contributed a game- and career-high seven assists against St. Joe's. Philoxy added six rebounds of her own, Taylor had three steals and Sims recorded two blocks.
• Philoxy continues to position herself as one of the nation's top ball distributors. Philoxy (7.2 apg) sits fourth in Division I in assists per game and has contributed eight or more dimes in seven games this season. The co-captain's total dimes (101) lead the country.
• On Thursday, it was announced that incoming freshman guard Stefanie Kulesza has graduated high school early and enrolled at the University of Massachusetts. An ESPN Top 100 recruit in the Class of 2021, the 5-foot-11 native of Wilmington, Delaware signed her National Letter of Intent with the Minutewomen in November 2020. Kulesza is eligible to practice and play immediately.
