Minutewomen Drop Conference Contest To Toledo

AMHERST, Mass. – Massachusetts women's basketball (18-6, 10-3 MAC) fell to Toledo (14-10, 8-5) 60-52 on Wednesday night at the Mullins Center. Despite a strong defensive showing for the Minutewomen, offensive difficulties proved to be too much to overcome.
Megan Olbrys led the way for the Minutewomen, recording her seventh double-double of the season with 20 points and 10 rebounds. It marked the third 20-point double-double of the season for Olbrys. Yahmani McKayle and Allie Palmieri chipped in 12 points each, with McKayle securing four steals and knocking down three triples, and Palmieri dishing out four assists and adding four steals.
Chinenye Odenigbo did a bit of everything for the Minutewomen on the defensive end, blocking four shots and attaining four steals.
The defensive unit shined for UMass, opening the game by forcing Toledo into four consecutive turnovers before registering its first shot. The Minutewomen again forced the Rockets into four consecutive turnovers to open the second half and drew three charges in the contest.
A late 12-0 run for Toledo from 5:13 until 1:07 in the fourth quarter cemented the win for the Rockets. Toledo held UMass to 18-of-63 (28.6 percent) from the field, marking the first time since Nov. 23, 2024 against Army (.254; 14-of-55) the Minutewomen shot under 30 percent from the field.
Toledo's Patricia Anumgba scored a game high 22 points and seven steals, recording her 1000th career point in the matchup.
Breaking Down the Action
- Megan Olbrys started the scoring for the Minutewomen, putting back an Allie Palmieri miss at 8:35 to make the score 2-0 UMass.
- After four consecutive turnovers by the Rockets, Toledo got on the board with a triple from Patricia Anumgba from the left corner at 6:49 to bring the contest to 4-3, Minutewomen.
- McKayle buried a triple from the top of the key with 4:36 left in the first quarter to knot the game at 7-7.
- Ayanna Franks hit Lilly Ferguson on the block for an easy jump hook at 1:52 to bring UMass within two, 10-12.
- Olbrys went on a 7-2 run by herself from 7:31 until 2:56 in the second, cutting the Rocket lead to just four, 21-17, and bringing her total to nine points on the game.
- Olbrys drew a charge on the defensive end and immediately scored on the ensuing possession, keeping UMass down four, 23-19, with 1:22 left in the half.
- Anumgba hit her third three of the half with eight seconds left on the clock in the second quarter to extend the Rockets lead to 26-19, while also surpassing the 1,000-career point mark.
- McKayle hit nothing but net from behind the left arc and Olbrys finished off an and-one on the ensuing possession to open the second half, cutting the UMass deficit to just one, 26-25, with 8:40 left in the third.
- McKayle connected on a pair of free throws at 3:23 to stop a 3:04 scoring drought for the Minutewomen, bringing the score to 34-30 in favor of Toledo.
- A 7-1 run for the Rockets that included four free throws and another Anumgba triple increased the Toledo lead to 41-31 with 1:44 to play in the third.
- Aiyanna Perkins beat the buzzer on a baseline jumper to end the third quarter, pulling UMass with six, 42-36, entering the fourth quarter.
- Palmieri brought the game back to a one possession contest after knocking down a pair of free throws at 7:23 to make the score 43-40.
- Palmieri connected on a pullup jumper at 5:37 to give the Minutewomen a 44-43 lead with 5:37.
- Consecutive Rockets three's gave Toledo a 49-44 lead with 3:32 remaining in the game.
- The Toledo run reached 10-0 by 1:55, pushing the Rocket lead to 53-44.
- Ferguson stopped the 12-0 Rocket lead with a putback layup at 1:07 to bring the score to 46-55 in favor of Toledo.
- Palmieri hit a triple at 0:39 to and finished off an and-one with 0:27 left to bring UMass within five, 57-52, but the late run proved to be too much as the Rockets held on to secure a 52-60 victory.
