Minutewomen return to action Friday night in crucial matchup with GW
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts women's basketball fell to La Salle by a 69-63 score on Sunday at the Mullins Center. The Minutewomen are now 10-5 and 6-4 in Atlantic 10 Conference play, while La Salle improves to 9-8 and an even 5-5 mark in conference.
Â
Senior Sam Breen once again contributed a double-double effort with 15 points to go with 11 rebounds. Sophomore Sydney Taylor and freshman Ber'Nyah Mayo added 11 points each, and graduate student Maddie Sims added a major presence on the glass with five of her seven rebounds coming at the offensive end.
Â
Despite the loss, the Minutewomen absolutely dominated the rebounding margin, 46-28, including a +11 advantage on the offensive glass that resulted in 23 second chance points. The 20 total offensive rebounds for the squad are tied for the most since the 2018-19 season.
Â
Massachusetts was held to just a 2-of-10 first period shooting performance and limited by seven turnovers in the quarter. La Salle capitalized with a 23-5 run into the second stanza, stretching its lead to as much as 16 points with 5:33 remaining before halftime. But the Minutewomen refused to back down, closing the half with their own 12-3 stretch and cutting the deficit down to seven.
Â
It was a back-and-forth third quarter off of adjustments at halftime as UMass continued to battle. The squad moved as close as five points of La Salle in the fourth period, though both teams were hampered by foul trouble that saw Breen, Sims and Mayo all reach four while Taylor fouled out in the fourth quarter.
Â
Massachusetts plays next on Fri., Feb. 5 in a 5 p.m. home game vs. George Washington at the Mullins Center.
