Four Minutewomen Collected Double-Digit Points

AMHERST, Mass. – Massachusetts women's basketball (21-6, 13-3 MAC) defeated Western Michigan (9-18, 5-11), 64-48, on a Saturday afternoon contest in Kalamazoo. The Minutewomen used a 21-7 advantage in the second quarter to run past the Broncos.
 

Graduate Allie Palmieri led the Minutewomen in the contest with 14 points, four rebounds and two assists on an efficient 6-12 from the field. Sophomore Yahmani McKayle added 11 points and five assists and Olbrys tacked on 12 points and six rebounds. Aiyanna Perkins tied her career-high of 10 points in the contest, and is the second time in three games she has reached 10 points. 

After falling into an early 12-2 hole just under three minutes into action, the Minutewomen went on a 30-11 run until the half. UMass shot 52 percent (26-of-52) in the contest, marking the second highest field goal percentage of the season and the fifth time Massachusetts has surpassed the .500 mark this season.


Breaking Down the Action      

  • Minutewomen started the scoring with a jumper by Allie Palmieri 31 seconds in 
  • After trailing the Broncos for 11 minutes, Minutewomen went on a 6-0 run to put them up 12-4 
  • Palmieri ended the scoring for the first quarter with a shot beyond the arc 
  • Minutewomen continued the scoring drive into the second quarter with a 10-0 run led by Perkins and Olbrys, each tallying four points 
  • McKayle had back-to-back scoring plays with a jumper and three pointer  
  • The Minutewomen went on another small 6-0 run, ending the half 32-23. 
  • The Minutewomen started the offense for the second half, going 7-0 with two layups from Odenigbo and a three-point shot from Palmieri 
  • The Broncos went on a small scoring run, grabbing four points before the Minutewomen up the scoring ante, getting six points in one minute 
  • McKayle got another two points a minute and a 10 seconds later, with a layup by Odenigbo 32 seconds later 
  • A free throw from Franks at 1:30, ended the Minutewomens scoring, 50-36, in the third quarter 
  • A foul from WMUs Harness let Perkins grab two free throws to start off the final quarter 
  • A layup from Olbrys at 6:47 and layup from Ferguson a minute later, give UMass a 14-point lead  
  • The Minutewomen lead with 10-2 run in scoring, with Olbrys leading with six points from two layups and a pair of free throws  
  • Western Michigan throws two shots beyond the arc but are unable to catch up to the Minutewomens 20-point lead, ending the matchup, 64-48.
