Women's Basketball Falls To Toledo In MAC Quarterfinals

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Massachusetts women's basketball (23-7, 15-4 MAC) fell to Toledo (16-14, 10-9 MAC) 67-24, on a Wednesday night matchup at Rocket Arena in the MAC Tournament Quarterfinals. The Minutewomen clawed back from a 15-point deficit, but a late Toledo run sealed the game for UMass. 

Yahmani McKayle led the charge for the Minutewomen, totaling 24 points, two assists and three steals. Megan Olbrys added nine points and nine boards, with Palmieri chipping in 10 points and three rebounds.  

The Rockets held UMass to just 33.9 percent from the field, the third-lowest mark of the season, and the lowest percentage since the two teams first met on Feb. 18 at the Mullins Center (28.6 percent).  

Toledo was led by Patricia Anumgba who tallied a 19-point 12-rebound double-double.  

Breaking Down the Action:       

  • Yahmani McKayle netted the first points for the Minutewomen, connecting on a layup at 9:48 to open a 2-0 advantage. 
  • Toledo responded with a 9-0 run spanning 1:43, taking a 9-2 lead with 7:40 remaining in the first quarter.  
  • A strip by McKayle and hitting an outlet pass to Palmieri ended a 14-0 Rockets run to bring the score to 14-4 in favor of Toledo at 5:37.  
  • A Chinenye Odenigbo hook and steal on the ensuing possesion lead to an easy layup for Aiyanna Perkins, to cut the Toledo lead to 16-8 with 3:49 left in the first.  
  • The Minutewomen run reached 8-0 with a McKayle layup and Palmieri jumper to cut the UMass deficit to just 16-12 at 2:30.  
  • Toledo connected on a three pointer to end the opening quarter, taking a 21-12 lead into the second.  
  • Palmieri responded to a Rockets three with a long jumper, bringing the score to 24-14 in favor of Toledo at 8:56 in the second.  
  • McKayle connected on consecutive layups to cut the deficit back to single digits, with the Minutewomen trailing 29-20 with 4:40 remaining in the half. 
  • Olbrys opened the second half with a left-handed hook shot, bringing the contest to 36-26 in favor of Toledo.  
  •  From 4:19 until 1:21 in the third quarter, the Minutewomen orchestrated a 10-0 run, bringing the score to 42-38 with the Rockets staying in the lead. 
  • McKayle went on a 6-0 run by herself to tie the game at 44 all with 6:58 to go in the contest.  
  • Olbrys converted an and-one with 4:09 left to play in the game, bringing the score to 51-49 with the Rockets ahead.  
  • Following a Toledo triple, Plamieri connectedon two free throws to keep the score one-possesion at 54-51 with 3:07 left to play.  
  • McKayle connected from deep with 1:41 remaining in the game, cutting the score to 58-54.  
  •  A 6-0 Toledo run sealed the win for the Rockets.
