Minutewomen Fall To Wisconsin In Weekend Championship

Juliana Shields put together a multi-hit game for the Minutewomen.
TAMPA, Fla. – The University of Massachusetts softball team fell to Wisconsin in the championship game of the USF Tournament on Sunday morning at the USF Softball Complex, 9-0. The Minutewomen were led at the plate by Juliana Shields, who finished the game with a pair of hits for UMass.

The Minutewomen opened up the morning by loading the bases with two down in the first, starting with a Shields single before a pair of walks by Samantha Torres and Kendra Allen. Shields added her second hit of the morning in the fifth inning with a single through the right side that put a pair of runners on with one down.

UMass put two in scoring position the second inning as well after loading the bases in the first as Kristina Day opened up the frame with a single to left field, her fourth hit in her last five trips to the plate.

Wisconsin used a six-run first inning to pull ahead early before adding a run in the third and two in the fourth to go ahead 9-0.

UMass returns to action next weekend in Lynchburg, Va. at the Liberty Challenge and will open up on Friday, March 13 against Binghamton and Albany.
