| Game Notes | Massachusetts // St. Bonaventure (available shortly) |
• Winners in eight straight and 11 of its last 12, University of Massachusetts women's basketball wraps up a quick two-game road swing on Wed., Jan. 8 at St. Bonaventure. Opening tip on ESPN+ is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Reilly Center.
• A win on Wednesday night would give the Minutewomen their ninth straight triumph, tying a program record in a feat last matched from Feb. 4-March 1, 1998. It would also give the squad back-to-back wins to open Atlantic 10 play for the first time since 1999-2000 (three straight).
• Overall, Massachusetts holds a 32-29 lead in the all-time series with St. Bonaventure, but lately the Bonnies have had UMass' number taking each of the last three meetings (since Feb. 13, 2016) and six straight at the Reilly Center (since Feb. 4, 2007).
• Despite being shorthanded, the Minutewomen survived a furious Duquesne comeback on Sat., Jan. 4, leaving Pittsburgh with an 81-77 victory. Five different players scored in double figures, led by a game-high 18 points from senior Hailey Leidel. Junior Sam Breen poured in 16 points and was one rebound short of her second consecutive double-double performance.
• Leidel moved up to No. 4 on the Massachusetts all-time career scoring list in the game at Boston University on Dec. 11. The Brownstown, Mich. native (1,594) needs 85 points to tie former Minutewoman Melissa Gurile (1992-96; 1,679) for No. 3 on the list. At the top is Sue Peters (1,858), who reached that mark in a career spanning 1976-80.
• Leidel also needs just six points and two rebounds to become one of only three players in program history with 1,600 career points and 600 boards. She has made at least one three-point field goal in 19 straight games since Feb. 24, 2019, and 36 of her last 37 games dating back to Dec. 7, 2018.
• Perhaps one of the biggest new additions for the Maroon and White this season has been the inside presence of freshman Maeve Donnelly. Donnelly (3.21) leads all Division I freshmen nationally in blocks per game and with 45 total, needs just seven to tie the UMass freshman record–Melissa Gurile had 52 stops in her rookie season of 1992-93.
• In the 12 games since UMass fell to Providence on Nov. 9, the Minutewomen (11-1) are averaging over 74 points per game with a +16.9 scoring margin. Leidel leads the attack averaging 18.6 points in that span followed up by Breen (17.3 ppg) and sophomore Destiney Philoxy (13.6 ppg).
