Massachusetts Ties Program Record With Ninth Straight Win

Minutewomen pick up road victory at St. Bonaventure, 62-52
ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – Led by a game-high 22 points from senior Hailey Leidel, University of Massachusetts women's basketball defeated St. Bonaventure, 62-52, on Wednesday night at the Reilly Center. The Minutewomen are 12-2 (2-0 Atlantic 10) with the result, while the Bonnies drop to 3-12 (0-2 Atlantic 10) on the year.
Â
UMass' ninth straight victory ties the longest such streak in program history, ends a three-game skid against the Bonnies and is the first road win over St. Bonaventure since Feb. 4, 2007. It also marks the fastest the Maroon and White have reached 12 wins in a season.
Â
Leidel added three rebounds to become one of just three UMass players all-time to log 1,600 career points and 600 rebounds. Junior Sam Breen came off the bench to contribute 13 points and five rebounds, while sophomore Destiney Philoxy returned to game action and logged a game-high four assists on the night.
UMass led or was tied with the Bonnies for all but 40 seconds in the first half, but the score was within two possessions for most of the first 20 minutes. An 8-0 SBU run late in first quarter gave Bonnies a brief lead before two free throws from Philoxy late in the stanza put the visitors back in front.
Â
The teams traded buckets down the stretch of the second quarter before UMass took a 29-23 lead into halftime. Leidel had eight points at the break thanks partly to a pair of treys, and both Breen and classmate Paige McCormick had four rebounds apiece. Philoxy nearly drained a half-court prayer at the second quarter buzzer before the attempt rattled out.
Â
Leidel and Philoxy spearheaded a quick 8-3 run out of the break to kick off a 10-minute stretch in which UMass heated up from the field with an 8-of-14 (57.1%) clip, swelling the lead to a game-high 16 points by the end of the period.
The Bonnies managed to quiet UMass early in the fourth with a quick 6-0 stretch although the double-digit margin remained for the rest of the night.
Â
For St. Bonaventure, Daijah Logan had a team-high 13 points and was followed up with 11 from Jurmee President.
Â
