Minutemen Blank Terriers For Third Consecutive Clean Sheet

September 07, 2019 | Men's Soccer

The third straight shutout to open the season marks the first time it has been done since 1996.

AMHERST, Mass. The University of Massachusetts men's soccer team needed a late save from Marvyn Dorchin to preserve the clean sheet in a 1-0 win over Boston University on Saturday afternoon at Rudd Field. The shutout marked the third straight for the Minutemen (3-0-0 Overall) to open up the season, marking the first time it has been accomplished since the 1996 season.

Dorchin's shutout preserving save came in the 89th-minute as BU's Matt McDonnell headed one from in close that the UMass goalkeeper sent wide with a dive to his left. The junior finished with a pair of saves as the Terriers put two of their 10 shots on target.

Nathaniel Cardoza broke the scoreless tie in the 78th-minute with his first career goal, sticking with a ball that was played in off the Terrier keeper to find the left side of the goal to give UMass a 1-0 lead heading into the final 10 minutes of the contest.

The Minutemen nearly got on the board in the first half after Eli Cronin and Quinn Serafino connected down the right side before Serafino sent one towards goal that hit off the left post and bounced away from danger.

UMass heads out on the road for three straight contests, beginning with a Tuesday matchup at Dartmouth in Hanover, N.H. before games at Central Connecticut State and Bryant.
