New Haven, Conn. — The University of Massachusetts soccer program (4-3-1) bested Yale (1-5-0), 2-1, on Saturday night at Reese Stadium. Samuel Theiss added his first goal as a Minuteman, and Shane Velez struck in the 74th minute to keep the game out of reach.

Junior goalkeeper Dean Linden picked up four saves in the contest, allowing just the lone goal. Linden moves up 34 saves on the campaign with a 75.6 save percentage.

Massachusetts defense continued to stifle its opponent, marking the third consecutive game allowing no more than one goal, and four of its last five matches.

Breaking Down The Action

Rian Mulherin snuck by the defense, finding himself with just the goalie to beat, but his shot narrowly missed high in the third minute.
Yale recorded three shots over a six minute stretch from 9:24 to 15:57, with none registering on net.
Theiss netted his first goal as a Minuteman in the 44th minute off a beautifully placed header that rolled by the keeper to open the scoring before the break, giving UMass 1-0.
Velez added an insurance goal in the 75th minute, as his right footed strike kicked off an opponent and into the right corner to give Massachusetts a 2-0 advantage.
Yale's Andrew Myerson cut the match to one to make the score 2-1 in the 80th minute.
In the 87th minute, a diving save by Linden kept the Bulldogs off the board, effectively ending the contest at 2-1.
