Men’s Soccer Shutout In Road Loss At Dartmouth

September 10, 2019 | Men's Soccer

UMass’ streak of scoreless defense to start the 2019 season ended in the 21st-minute of a 1-0 loss.

HANOVER, N.H. The University of Massachusetts men's soccer team allowed its only goal of the 2019 season so far as Dartmouth found the back of the net in the 21st-minute of a 1-0 win over the Minutemen on Tuesday evening at Burnham Field. The Minutemen (3-1-0 Overall) came into the game fresh off of three consecutive clean sheets to open the season as they ended up with 291 scoreless minutes defensively to open the 2019 campaign.

UMass goalkeeper Marvyn Dorchin was tested early by the Dartmouth attack, coming up with a pair of consecutive saves in the 17th and 18th minutes as the Big Green fired five early shot attempts on their way to attempting 11 shots on the night.

Dartmouth's goal came just minutes later as Zach Kalk found Dawson McCartney from the right side of the field for a header at the far post to give them a 1-0 advantage that stood for the remainder of the night.

The Minuteman attack turned up the pressure in the final 12 minutes of the half, earning a pair of corners while earning a chance off a Chandler O'Dwyer free kick that nearly connected to a UMass attacker in front of the goal. James McPherson had the best chance of the night up until that point for UMass in the 33rd-minute, firing a shot at goal that was saved by the Dartmouth keeper.

UMass attempted five shots in the second half to just three attempts in the first half, earning a chance on an O'Dwyer free kick from midfield in the 58th-minute that was redirected to the outside of the left post. Ryan Levay linked up with Quinn Serafino on a counterattack in the 75th-minute that found Serafino loose down the right side before a Dartmouth defender tackled him from behind to send the ball out for a Minuteman corner kick.

McPherson nearly had the equalizer moments later in the 75th-minute, getting his head on one that hit the crossbar off a long Ryan Saul throw in. The sophomore forward attempted a team-high four shots on the night with three on target.

The Minutemen return to action on Saturday as they remain out on the road to take on Central Connecticut State on Saturday at 6 p.m.
