Men's Soccer Recruiting FAQ
How can I be recruited by UMass?
We encourage you to reach out to our coaching staff, and in response, expect to be sent a link to fill out a profile in our recruiting database. This will allow us to have a record of you in our system and give you better information about how you would fit in our program and at the university. Due to the sheer volume of mail that we receive, we may not be able to respond individually to each note. We also encourage potential student-athletes to consider the camps at www.masssoccerschool.com.
Does the UMass coaching staff run or work at camps?
Head Coach Fran O’Leary runs the Massachusetts Soccer School (www.masssoccerschool.com), which offers one-day ID clinics to high school-age players that are interested in learning more about playing in college.
What do I need to do to make the recruiting process easier?
Among the first steps would be to put together a highlight video that gives the coaching staff a sense of you as a player. Please make sure it is easy for the staff to identify you in any video that you send along.
Another important first step is to register at the NCAA Eligibility Center, which is an essential prerequisite to playing soccer at UMass and most other academic institutions.
When can I contact/be contacted by a UMass coach?
Per NCAA rules, you may reach out to a UMass coach at any time, and you are also welcome to visit the campus, attend matches, and speak to staff while at UMass. However, we are not able to return phone calls or emails until September 1 of your junior year in high school, so please know that we will not reach out to you before that date.
How do I learn more about the UMass Men’s Soccer program?
If you live near campus, we encourage you to attend one of our matches, which you can find on our schedule page. Ask your coaches, friends and family if they know UMass or anyone who has played here. We also encourage you to check out the program on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or our other social media channels, where you will get an inside view of the team.
What are the deadlines in the UMass recruiting process?
For potential players graduating from high school in the Spring of 2016, we are actively working on putting together our recruiting class and we encourage you to reach out to us and attend a camp if possible. The UMass application deadlines for those 2016 graduates are in the spring of 2016 and we will keep you informed of upcoming dates you need to meet.
Can I transfer into the UMass Men’s Soccer team from another institution?
Any player considering transferring institutions to play soccer would need to be granted an official release by their current athletic department’s compliance office, and send that release to other schools that they would be interested in. Ask a coach or administrator if you need assistance with this process.
Does UMass offer tryouts for potential players or those already on campus?
We generally offer tryouts for current UMass students in the late winter/early spring of each school year, and have found strong players from this process in the past. For those not yet enrolled at UMass or another institution, we encourage you to look at the Massachusetts Soccer School.
