Softball Posts 13 Hits In Game Two Of Doubleheader Split Against Fordham

Kaitlyn Stavinoha homered and drove in four runs in a game two win.

AMHERST, Mass.Kaitlyn Stavinoha drove in four runs on a pair of hits in an 11-6 game two win as the University of Massachusetts softball team split its doubleheader against Fordham on Senior Day at Sortino Field. The Minutewomen (20-19 Overall, 10-4 Atlantic 10) tallied 13 hits in game two after dropping the series opener to the Rams, 6-3.
 
Game One – Fordham 6, UMass 3 - Box Score
Both teams plated a pair of runs in their first trips to the plate in the series, with Fordham going ahead 2-0 in the top half of the first 2-0 on a Madie Aughinbaugh RBI base hit.
 
A trio of UMass seniors strung together three consecutive doubles in the bottom half, starting with an Erin Stacevicz double followed by RBI doubles from Stavinoha and Kaycee Carbone to knot it up at 2-2. Carbone wrapped up game one with a pair of hits while Stacevicz also finished with two of her own.
 
The UMass offense kept it rolling in the second inning as back-to-back singles from Riley Gregoire and Hannah Bunker set up a Stacevicz RBI single to center field for her second hit of the contest as the Minutewomen pulled ahead 3-2.
 
Fordham used a pair of two-run home runs in their next trip to the plate in the third, one from Molly Roark and another from Maria Trivelpiece that put the Rams up 6-3 in a score that held for the remainder of the contest.
 
Game Two – UMass 11, Fordham 6 - Box Score
The early offense for both squads carried over into game two as the Rams went up by a run in the top of the first before a pair of home runs from UMass in the first and second innings gave the Minutewomen a two-run advantage.
 
Stavinoha's fourth homer of the year came with one out in the first inning to score Bunker, a two-run shot to right field for one of Stavinoha's two hits in game two.
 
Kendra Allen's second career long ball followed in the second inning as the freshman went yard with a solo shot to left center that lead off the frame.
 
Fordham took advantage of some UMass fielding miscues in the top of the third to build a 5-3 lead, scoring four unearned runs in the inning as they finished game two with just one earned run scored.
 
UMass responded with two runs to knot it up at 5-5 in the bottom half of the third, beginning with a Melissa Garcia RBI single that brought in Stavinoha before Danielle Ellis hit a sacrifice fly deep enough to right field to bring in Carbone from third. Garcia finished. Game two with a pair of hits and a run scored.
 
After the Rams took a 6-5 lead in a Deanna Burbridge RBI single, UMass strung together a three-run two-out rally in the fifth to go up 8-6. Bunker started the rally with a two-out RBI single to left field prior to a Stavinoha two-RBI single to right that broke the tie and put UMass up by a pair.
 
Three more runs scored in the sixth for the Minutewomen as they padded their lead to five runs, first on a Bunker ball that was mishandled by the Fordham defense before Stacevicz's second hit drove in two more with a two-RBI single to center field. Bunker finished the contest with three hits while reaching base four times.
 
Quinn Breidenbach went the distance in the game two win after tossing 4.2 innings of relief in game one, striking out four in 7.0 innings of work in game two as she improved to 9-4 on the year.
 
Gregoire added a pair of hits to go along with two runs scored as UMass had five batters finish with multi-hit games while seven reached base via a hit.
 
The Minutewomen and the Rams are scheduled to wrap up the series tomorrow at noon on Sortino Field.
