Minutewomen Bounce Back For Game Two Win In Doubleheader Split

April 24, 2019 | Softball

Kristina Day drove in the game-winning run in the top of the sixth as UMass won game two 2-1.

KINGSTON, R.I.Freshman Kristina Day came up with a clutch pinch-hit to help the University of Massachusetts softball team take game two of the doubleheader on the road at Rhode Island 2-1 after the Minutewomen fell 4-3 in game one. Day's RBI double in the top of the sixth was the difference as Quinn Breidenbach closed out her eighth win of the year with seven innings of one-run softball in the circle.

Game One – Rhode Island 4, UMass 3 - Box Score
The Minutewomen put together a late rally by scoring two runs in the six while putting a pair of runners on in their final trip to the plate as the comeback bid fell just short to the Rams, 4-3.

UMass scored first in the opening frame after a Hannah Bunker walk led to a run on a 2-out error in the outfield as Bunker crossed all the way from first.

The Rams scored three in the bottom half of the first, going ahead 2-1 on a Susan Harrison 2-out RBI double to left field before an error led to the third run as the home team went up 3-1.

Kaitlyn Stavinoha started a two-run rally in the sixth inning with her second hit of the opening contest, singling to right field before Kaycee Carbone followed with one of her own to put runners at the corners. Stavinoha went on to score from third on some crafty baserunning after a Rhode Island error before Caroline Videtto drove in a pinch-running Kristina Day from third with a sacrifice fly to right field to trim the lead to one.

Bunker's second free pass opened up the final trip to the plate for the Minutewomen. Riley Gregoire entered the game to pinch run and made it over to scoring position at second on an Erin Stacevicz groundout before a groundout ended the game with runners on first and second.

Kenadee Rausch tied her career-high for strikeouts as she fanned seven in 6.0 innings of work with three earned runs allowed on six hits.

Game Two – UMass 2, Rhode Island 1 - Box Score
UMass held a one-run lead for four innings after going up 1-0 in the second inning on three consecutive hits. Melissa Garcia started the rally with a single to right field before a Danielle Ellis bunt stayed fair for a base hit. Kendra Allen drove in a pinch-running Jackie Kelley with a RBI single to center field.

Breidenbach allowed just one run in a complete game effort, a solo homer from Erica Robles in the bottom of the fourth to knot it up at 1-1. The junior moved to 8-4 on the year with four strikeouts and no walks allowed in the win.

The Minutewomen nearly regained the lead in the fifth inning after Stacevicz reached with a leadoff single for her second hit of the contest. Carbone singled to center field with two down before a throw into the plate got Stacevicz out in time to end the inning.

Ellis' second hit started the one-run rally in the sixth inning as the freshman doubled off the wall in left center before Day's pinch-hit RBI double off the third base bag brought in Videtto from center field.

The Minutewomen will return home to Sortino Field for a three-game series against Fordham beginning at 11 a.m. on Saturday morning on Senior Day.
