AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass Sports Luncheon Committee selected softball senior Kaitlyn Stavinoha, tennis junior Janja Kovacevic and women's lacrosse redshirt senior Kiley Anderson as the UMass Student-Athletes of the Week on Monday. Anderson, Kovacevic and Stavinoha will be recognized by the committee at the UMass Sports Luncheon on Wed., March 6.
Anderson notched 11 goals, including a single game school-record nine on Saturday, as UMass split its week with a road loss at Harvard before a home win against UConn. Against Harvard, Anderson tallied two goals, a groundball and 12 draw controls. She followed that performance against UConn with a school-record nine goals (the most for any player in the NCAA this season), tied the school record by adding an assist for 10 points, and won seven draws. Her 11 goals during the week accounted for one-third for UMass' 31 goals scored, while her 19 draw controls were nearly half of UMass' 44 won.
Kovacevic again led UMass to victory with a pair of wins at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles as Massachusetts went to Dartmouth College and took a highly-contested 4-3 victory from the Big Green at their home courts on Saturday. Kovacevic and doubles partner Martina Bocchi sealed the first team point of the match with their 6-2 victory over Dartmouth's top pairing of Racquel Lyn and Nicole Conard. Later on the day, with Massachusetts clinging to a 3-2 lead and in need of one more team point, Kovacevic battled through a three-set match over Dartmouth's No. 1 singles player, Lyn for a 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 victory that earned UMass its seventh win of the year. Massachusetts is undefeated in its last five matches and has not lost in over a month. Kovacevic is now undefeated in her last 10 matches, dating back to her singles win at Harvard on Feb. 3.
Stavinoha helped lead the Minutewomen to a perfect 5-0 weekend at the Purple and Gold Invite at East Carolina over the weekend, batting .500 on nine hits to go along with a .722 slugging-percentage. The senior posted three multi-hit games and two multi-RBI efforts, opening the weekend with back-to-back 3-of-4 games at the plate with two RBI and a run scored against both Columbia and Winthrop, adding a pair of doubles against the Eagles. Stavinoha helped the Minutewomen run-rule Columbia on Sunday morning, picking up a two-RBI triple for one of her two hits in a 10-2 five-inning win.
