Oliver Tosses Gem As Minutewomen Shutout ECU To Win Fourth Straight

Kiara Oliver tossed 5.1 innings of no-hit softball on her way to her first complete game shutout of the season.
GREENVILLE, N.C. – Kiara Oliver tossed a complete game shutout as the University of Massachusetts softball team shutout host East Carolina 5-0 to win their fourth straight contest after defeating Winthrop 2-1 earlier in the day. The UMass (7-7 Overall) pitching staff finished the second day of play at the Purple and gold Invite by allowing just six hits and one run in 14 innings of action while striking out nine.
Game One – UMass 2, Winthrop 1 - Box Score
Quinn Breidenbach moved to 2-2 on the season with five innings of three-hit softball on her way to picking up the win while allowing just one Winthrop run to come across in the third inning on a two-out triple to deep center field. Breidenbach settled in after allowing the only run Eagle run of the contest, setting down the next seven batters before being replaced by Oliver in the top of the sixth.
Oliver fanned the first three batters that stepped up to the plate in the inning, moving her to a then career mark of 206 strikeouts to pass Carrie Jeffries (1998-2001, 205) for 17th-most on the UMass career strikeout list while also picking up her third save of the season to tie Danielle Henderson (1996-99, 3) for the most in a single season. The sophomore's save marked the fifth of her career, which also tied Henderson for second-most all-time.
The Minutewoman offense got all the offense they needed in the opening game in the second inning, stringing together two runs on four hits and an error to take a 2-0 lead. Hannah Bunker helped jumpstart the UMass offense with a double that moved a pinch-running Caroline Videtto over to third with no outs for Melissa Garcia, who came through with a RBI single to drive home Videtto.
After Kaycee Carbone loaded the bases with a single to right, Erin Stacevicz's second of two hits in the contest drove in the second run with two outs to give the Minutewomen their final run of the game.
Game Two – UMass 5, East Carolina 0 - Box Score
Oliver put together her second straight start where she held opponents without a base hit for over five innings of play, tossing all seven innings to grab the shutout win while striking out five. The sophomore's second no-hit bid in as many starts ended with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning before Oliver bounced back by getting East Carolina to groundout into a pair of fielder's choices to leave the bases loaded.
Carbone provided Oliver a three-run lead in the top of the second inning, smashing a no doubt three-run home run over the wall in right field to put the Minutewomen ahead 3-0 with her second blast of the season.
UMass added two more runs in the sixth inning as Jackie Kelley started a two-out rally with one of her two singles in the game. Alyssa Lyon's first career triple brought in Kelley all the way from first base as the sophomore infielder sent an extra base hit to the wall in centerfield to extend the lead to four. Stacevicz's beat out the throw from third for her second hit of the night brought in the fifth and final run on a RBI single.
Stavinoha and Garcia each added a hit for a UMass squad that posted eight hits in the nightcap.
The Minutewomen will wrap up play at the ECU Softball Stadium tomorrow morning with a 9 a.m. rematch against Columbia.
