Faulhaber's Career Day Leads Women's Lax Past Richmond, 17-13

Senior nets career-high four goals in second half to keep Minutewomen in first place.
RICHMOND, Va. - Senior Ashley Faulhaber scored a career-high four goals, all in the second half, to lead the UMass women's lacrosse team to a 17-13 win at Richmond on Friday afternoon. The victory improves the Minutewomen to 7-0 in Atlantic 10 play with UMass (12-3) now able to win the league regular-season title on Sunday afternoon at VCU.
The loss was just the third of the season for Richmond (12-3, 6-1 A-10) which entered the game with league's top defense allowing just 7.71 goals per game. UMass handed the Spiders their first home loss of the season and snapped a seven-game win streak.
For the Minutewomen, the victory extended their current win streak to eight games and their NCAA record for consecutive league victories to 61 games.
UMass led 8-7 at the intermission after a back-and-forth first half. Kaitlyn Cerasi scored two of her three goals in the final eight minutes of the opening half as part of a three-goal run by the Minutewomen to close out the stanza.
Faulhaber scored the opening goal of the second half, but Richmond tied the game, 9-9, at the 25:54 mark with back-to-back goals. UMass opened things up over the next five minutes with three straight goals punctuated by a man-up tally from Faulhaber. After Richmond responded, Faulhaber netted back-to-back goals giving UMass a four-goal lead.Â
The two teams traded scores after that with Hannah Burnett notching her 49th of the season with 1:38 to go before Richmond's Julie Ball tallied the final goal of the game 20 seconds later.
Burnett finished with a game-high five points on three goals and two assists, while Cerasi had three goals and an assist. Stephanie Croke had two goals and an assist, while Haley Connaughton had two goals midway through the first half. Kelly Marra finished the game with a career-high two assists.
Lauren Hiller earned the win in cage making eight saves including several at the door step, while her Richmond counterpart Megan Gianforte made 13 saves in the loss.
Katie Sciandra led the Spiders with four goals and an assist, while Aly Fries had three goals.Â
Overall, UMass held a 37-to-29 shot advantage and forced 18 Richmond turnovers while committing just 12 miscues. The Spiders held an 18-to-14 edge in draw controls but were unable to convert winning 12-of-16 in the second half into goals.
The Minutewomen will close out the road trip on Sunday afternoon at VCU with the opening draw set for Noon. The game will be streamed live on the Atlantic 10 Digital Network. A win for UMass will earn the program the No. 1 seed in the Atlantic 10 Championship tournament in May as the Minutewomen aim for their 10th consecutive league title.
