UMass Offense Heats Up In 12-2 Win Over St. John’s

The Minutewomen racked up 13 hits while five different batters recorded two or more.

QUEENS, N.Y. The University of Massachusetts softball team racked up 13 hits and scored 12 runs on Sunday as they capped off their weekend with a doubleheader split, defeating St. John's 12-2 in 5 innings at Red Storm Field. The Minutewomen (11-10 Overall) had five different batters record two or more hits while Jena Cozza and Jackie Kelley each drove in four runs in the win.
 
Game One – Boston University 7, UMass 4 - Box Score
Madison Gimpl led the UMass offense with a 3-of-4 showing at the plate with two RBI in a 7-4 loss to Boston University (9-14 Overall) in the first game of the day, driving in her first run of the game in the opening inning after a Jena Cozza leadoff single to take a 1-0 lead.
 
The Terriers put together three unanswered runs to go ahead 3-1, scoring two after a pair of UMass throwing errors in the second inning while adding one run with no outs in the third.
 
Gimpl's second hit started a rally of three unanswered UMass runs as the sophomore singled to leadoff the fourth followed by a pair of one-out walks to load the bases. Amy Smith drove in a run to pull the Minutewomen with a run, driving in a pinch-running Gregoire with one out.
 
Erin Stacevicz hit a double over the center fielder's head in the fifth inning after a Cozza leadoff single to put two runners in scoring position for Kaycee Carbone, who came through with a sacrifice deep in foul territory out in left to bring in Cozza. Gimpl's third hit and second RBI gave UMass their final lead of the afternoon as she sent a base hit out to right field to bring the count of 4-3.
 
The Terriers went on to add three runs in the following at-bat, going ahead 6-4 with a pair of two-out runs before going on to add another in the seventh inning.
 
Game Two – UMass 12, St. John's 2 (5 Innings) - Box Score
Kaitlyn Stavinoha and Hannah Bunker started a six-run second inning for UMass with back-to-back singles to open the frame before Bunker came in to score on a throwing error for the first run of the game.
 
Amy Smith and Jackie Kelley each drove in a run to put the Minutewomen up 3-0 followed by a Cozza double off the wall in right field to bring in two more. Carbone capped off the inning with a RBI single to left field as UMass went ahead of St. John's (7-18 Overall) 6-0.
 
The bats stayed hot in the next frame as Kelley picked up RBI number two out of her four in the game, grounding out but scoring Melissa Garcia before Cozza added two RBI of her own to her daily tally with a single to left to put UMass up 9-0.
 
St. John's scored their only two runs of the day on a pair of solo home runs by Krystal Puga, one in the third inning and one in the fifth.
 
UMass tacked on three more runs in the fourth inning to go up by 11 runs, plating the first of the inning on a Stavinoha single up the middle. The junior finished the contest 3-of-3 with three runs scored. Kelley added her third and fourth RBI with the bases loaded and two outs, singling to left field to bring in a pair.

Kiara Oliver tossed 5.0 innings as she won her sixth game of the season, striking out four while allowing just five hits.
 
UMass is scheduled to return to the field on Wednesday for their home opener against Boston College at Sortino Field at 4 p.m.
