Combined Effort Eases Men's Lacrosse By NJIT, 17-3

March 10, 2018 | Men's Lacrosse

Carr scores career-high six goals, 12 Minutemen record at least one point

AMHERST, Mass. - University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse recorded its most goals since the 2015 season as the Minutemen downed the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), 17-3, at Garber Field on Saturday afternoon. Senior Buddy Carr (Exeter, N.H.) paved the way on offense with six goals, while freshman Chris Connolly (Glastonbury, Conn.) netted five points via one tally and four assists.

In addition to Carr and Connolly, Jesse Leung (Brookline, Mass.) and Jeff Trainor (Billerica, Mass.) contributed four points apiece. Leung did so on four goals, while Trainor earned his quartet via four assists. Jake Lisauskas (Derry, N.H.; two goals) and Clayton Proctor (St. Davids, Pa.; two assists) also tallied multi-point outings.

Michael Biddle (Andover, Mass.), Shane Rinkus (Pembroke, Mass.), Ben Spencer (Danville, Calif.) and Kevin Tobin (Reading, Mass.) also scored once each. Mike Elcock (Needham, Mass.) and Dom St. Laurent (Nashua, N.H.) recorded an assist apiece as well. It marked the first collegiate points for Biddle and Elcock.

Vincent D'Agostino scored twice for NJIT while Aaron Forster had the team's lone additional goal. It went as the fewest goals allowed by the Minutemen since an 11-3 win over Hartford on March 1, 2016.

Massachusetts forced NJIT into 11 of the Highlanders 19 turnovers, led by Isaac Paparo (Westport, Conn.), Billy Philpott (Sandwich, Mass.) and Jackson Suboch (Toronto, Ontario), who created two NJIT turnovers apiece. Hampton Brannon (Atlanta, Ga.) backstopped the team to victory with four saves against one goal allowed before Sean Sconone (East Islip, N.Y.) and Cameron Carpenter (Buffalo, N.Y.) took over between the pipes. Sconone (3) and Carpenter (2) combined for five saves in relief of Brannon.

The Maroon and White controlled the faceoff dot, as senior Noah Rak (Norwich, Conn.) went 13-of-15 with 10 groundballs collected. Junior Tom Meyers (Radnor, Pa.) ended 5-of-8 with five groundballs and a caused turnover while Christian Trahan (Chelmsford, Mass.) won his first collegiate faceoff as well.

The Minutemen opened with a first quarter shutout and pushed ahead, 4-0, through the end of one frame. Carr score twice in the stanza on passes from Connolly while Lisauskas and Spencer converted as well. With the offense converting early, the defense limited NJIT to one shot in the stanza and forced the team into five of its six turnovers.

Connolly pushed the margin to five before Carr earned the hat trick with 10 minutes, 30 seconds to go in the second quarter. Carr's third strike of the day built the lead to 7-0 before NJIT found the back of the net as Forster earned his 20th tally of the season 70 seconds later.

Massachusetts followed with eight consecutive goals as the team built its lead to 14-1 entering the final quarter. Leung potted all four of his goals on the day during the streak and Carr added three, including a man-down conversion facilitated by Elcock.

The Minutemen continue their season on the road at UMass Lowell on Tues., March 13. First faceoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
