Lisauskas posts first collegiate hat trick; Rak wins 19-of-21 faceoffs
LOWELL, Mass. – University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse controlled possession with dominance at the faceoff dot and over the battle for groundballs as the Minutemen worked a 13-6 win from UMass Lowell at the Cushing Athletic Complex on Saturday.
Noah Rak (Norwich, Conn.) finished 19-of-21 on faceoffs with 15 groundballs against six different River Hawks. It marked the highest single-game faceoff win percentage for Rak in his career (.905). Rak's effort guided the Minutemen to a 47-30 lead in groundballs as Massachusetts scooped up more than UMass Lowell in all four quarters.
Massachusetts diversified its offense throughout the game, as eight scorers combined for the team's 13 goals.
Jake Lisauskas (Derry, N.H.) led the squad with his first collegiate hat trick. Three additional Minutemen posted three points apiece in Buddy Carr (Exeter, N.H.; two goals, one assist), Kevin Tobin (Reading, Mass.; one goal, two assists) and Jeff Trainor (Billerica, Mass.; two goals, one assist).
Billy Philpott (Sandwich, Mass.) converted twice – his first collegiate multi-goal outing – while six more members of the team added one point apiece. Chris Connolly (Glastonbury, Conn.), Shane Rinkus (Pembroke, Mass.) and Devin Spencer (Danville, Calif.) each scored once while Charlie O'Brien (Chelmsford, Mass.), Mike Elcock (Needham, Mass.) and Isaac Paparo (Westport, Conn.) tallied assists.
In addition to Rinkus' goal, the senior long-stick midfielder had five caused turnovers and four groundballs. Freshman Sam Eisenstadt (Needham, Mass.) added two caused turnovers and four groundballs in his second career start at close defense while Paparo, also a close defenseman, had a pair of caused turnovers to go along with five groundballs.
After UMass Lowell converted for the opening goal, the Minutemen rifled in four consecutive scores for a 4-1 advantage entering the final stages of the first quarter. Tobin started the scoring streak with his sixth conversion of the year before Lisauskas followed with his sixth of the season as well.
Spencer provided a highlight-reel strike with four minutes, 43 seconds to go in the opening quarter when he fielded a pass from O'Brien near the crease and whipped an over-the-shoulder shot inside the left post.
Trainor sized up the fourth UMass goal via a pass from Tobin, but the River Hawks responded with back-to-back tallies as the home side cut their deficit to 4-3 by the two-minute mark of the second quarter.
Connolly restarted the UMass attack with his eighth tally of the season, which boosted the team to a three-goal run that spanned only 27 seconds of game clock.
Philpott followed Connolly's lead with a transition score at the 59-second mark. After Rak won the ensuing faceoff, Rinkus collected the groundball and raced unchecked to the cage for his second conversion in as many games.
Rak continually granted Massachusetts possession during the contest as he won his opening 18 faceoffs, and his career day helped the Minutemen put the game out of reach after the River Hawks cut back within 9-6 of tying with 12:15 to go in the fourth.
With Rak winning play, the Minutemen scored the final four goals of the game. Carr converted with 11:03 to go before Philpott put in his second of the afternoon. Trainor and Lisauskas iced the outcome with tallies in the final minute.
The Maroon and White (3-4) return to Garber Field for their next game, a Sat., March 17 tilt with Hartford (2-3). First faceoff is slated for 1 p.m.
