Softball Returns To Action This Weekend At Diamond 9 Citrus Classic

The Minutewomen head into the weekend having won their last four games while outscoring their opponents 38-9 during the streak.
AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts softball team takes a four-game winning streak to Orlando, Fla. for five games at the Diamond 9 Citrus Classic this weekend, beginning with a doubleheader against Notre Dame and Delaware at 2:30 p.m. on Friday afternoon. The Minutewomen (5-4 Overall) won their final four games at the Madeira Beach Invitational last time out on Feb. 16-18, racking up 10 or more hits in all four wins while scoring 38 runs during the span.
 
Jena Cozza homered five times in the final four games during the tournament on her way to being named the Atlantic 10 Player of the Week after posting a .571 average at the plate to go along with 12 runs scored and a 1.857 slugging-percentage. Cozza's five home run weekend moved her into a tie for seventh-most all-time at UMass with 26 in her career, trailing Tiffany Meeks (2011-14) for sixth-most all-time with 27.
 
Nationally, Cozza ranks second in slugging percentage and fourth in home runs per game to go along with five home runs on the season that ranks 16th nationally. The senior infielder also leads the A-10 in seven categories at the plate while remaining near the top of multiple categories in the UMass record book, including second in slugging percentage (.680), third in career batting average (.385) and fourth in on-base percentage (.466).
 
Quinn Breidenbach went 2-0 with a 0.58 ERA, tossing 12.0 innings while allowing just one earned run and four hits on her way to earning the A-10 Pitcher of the Week award. On the season, Breidenbach owns a 2-1 record in the circle with a 1.00 ERA on her way to holding opponents to just a .128 average at the plate. The right-hander ranks 15th nationally in hits allowed per seven innings with 3.00.
 
As a team, the UMass batting average rose to .268 after the Minutewoman offense racked up 44 hits and 40 runs last time out on a .338 average at the plate. Kaycee Carbone posted a .529 average while driving in nine runs on nine hits to bring her season average up to .345. Cozza leads the way with a .458 average at the plate with team-highs in runs, hits and RBI. Freshman Hannah Bunker earned six free passes at the Madeira Beach Invitational to bring her on-base percentage up to .467 while her average at the plate ranks third-highest on the team at .304.
 
UMass will continue play into Saturday with matchups against FIU and the Czech National Team, beginning at 12:30 p.m. before wrapping up weekend play against UC Santa Barbara on Sunday at 9 a.m.
