Eight-goal run for Bulldogs in first half the difference maker.
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – An eight-goal run in the first half proved the difference maker as Yale defeated the No. 19 UMass women's lacrosse team 14-9 on Saturday afternoon at Reese Stadium.
The loss drops UMass to 1-2 on the season, while Yale improved to 3-0. The Minutewomen will return to action Wednesday, Feb. 28 at Marist (4 PM).
Kaitlyn Cerasi led the Minutewomen with three goals, while Hannah Burnett scored twice. Stephanie Croke and Holly Turner each had a goal and an assist each. In goal, Lauren Hiller made seven saves taking the loss.
The Bulldogs were led by five goals from Kayla Duperrouzel who also had an assist. Addie Zinsner, Barrett Carlson, and Emily Granger each had two goals. Sydney Marks made 11 saves in the game.
Yale held an 18-to-7 advantage in draw controls for the game which factored into the early run. UMass outshot the Bulldogs 34-to-32 and picked up 23 groundballs compared to 18 for the home team.
UMass opened the scoring with a goal from Kiley Anderson, but the Bulldogs then scored eight straight thanks in part to four from Duperrouzel. The Minutewomen scored three straight to close the half cutting the Yale lead to 11-5 at the intermission.
A three-goal run in the second half brought UMass within four, 12-8, but the Minutewomen were only able to muster one more score in the balance of the game.
