UMass Wins Fourth Straight, Defeats UMKC 10-2 In Six

Kaycee Carbone led the way with three hits for a UMass offense that recorded 10 or more hits for the fourth straight game.
MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. – The University of Massachusetts softball offense stayed hot as they racked up 10 or more hits for the fourth straight game on their way to a 10-2 win over UMKC in six innings on the final day of the EMU Madeira Beach Invitational. The Minutewomen (5-4 Overall) were led by Kaycee Carbone's 3-of-4 showing at the plate with four RBI while Jena Cozza drove in three runs on her fifth home run in the last four games.

Cozza's home run plated the first runs for UMass on the afternoon in the second inning as the senior sent a three-run shot over the wall in center field to score Amy Smith and Jackie Kelley and put the Minutewomen ahead 3-0 early. The home run moved Cozza into a three-way tie for seventh on the UMass career home run list, tying Brandi Cross and Scooter Wheeler with 26.

Madison Gimpl added a run in the bottom half of the third before UMass came back with three runs with two outs in the fourth the push the lead to seven at 7-0.

Erin Stacevicz singled on a bunt for one of her two hits in the game to put a pair of baserunners on for Kaitlyn Stavinoha, who followed with a RBI single to right field to score Cozza. Hannah Bunker singled for one of her two hits to bring in another before Carbone's first RBI of the afternoon capped off a three-run inning for UMass.

UMKC (3-7 Overall) scored a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning off Quinn Breidenbach, who allowed just three hits in 6.0 innings of work on her way to improving to 2-1 on the season. Breidenbach continued her scoreless-inning streak from yesterday's night cap, keeping UMKC off the board for the first four innings to give her eight-straight scoreless innings of work.

Carbone sealed the UMass win in the bottom of the sixth inning on her third hit of the day and ninth RBI of the weekend, sending a three-run shot to right field to bring in Bunker and Stavinoha as UMass recorded 10 runs for the second straight game.

UMass will be off next weekend before returning to the field on Friday, March 2 for a matchup against Notre Dame at 2:30 p.m. at the Diamond 9 Citrus Classic in Orlando, Fla.
