AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts men's soccer team was shutout at home in a 2-0 loss to Davidson on a rainy day at Rudd Field on Wednesday. The Minutemen (6-7-2 Overall, 2-4-0 Atlantic 10) outshot the Wildcats (8-4-1 Overall, 4-0-1 Atlantic 10) 12 to nine on the afternoon while earning five corner kicks in the second half to match Davidson in the category.
Davidson applied some early pressure in the opening moments of the match, attempting a pair of shots in the first six minutes that ended with an attempt that hit the left post. UMass goalkeeper Marvyn Dorchin picked up his first of two saves in the 17th-minute on a Wildcat header from in close off a corner kick to help keep the match scoreless through the first half.
Yosuke Hanya created a chance for UMass in the 35th-minute as the junior midfielder beat a pair of Davidson defenders down to the end line before sending in a cross for Eli Cronin that was cut off by Wildcat keeper Sawyer Gaffney.
The Wildcats broke through for the first goal of the match in the 60th-minute after a UMass giveaway in their own defensive end gave the visitors their first shot of the second half. Lucas Hauth scored both goals for Davidson, picking up his first to put them ahead 1-0 before scoring less than 10 minutes later to bring the count to 2-0.
