October 20, 2018 | Men's Soccer
UMass wraps up its 2018-19 campaign on the road at George Washington on Oct. 31.
AMHERST, Mass. – Dayton scored the game-winning goal with under a minute to go in the second overtime period as the University of Massachusetts men's soccer team fell to the Flyers in double overtime on Saturday afternoon at Rudd Field. The Minutemen (6-8-2 Overall, 2-5-0 Atlantic 10) outshot Dayton (6-5-4 Overall, 2-3-1 Atlantic 10) five to two in the overtime periods but could not put home the would-be game-winner.
Both squads finished the afternoon with double-digit shot attempts as UMass had 18 to Dayton's 13 despite both teams going without an attempt for the first 22 minutes of the contest before Konrad Gorich took a shot at goal on a free kick from 40-yards out. Dayton followed with their first shot attempt shortly after, one that was saved by Marvyn Dorchin, with header that sailed over the crossbar.
Jack Fulton led all players with six total shot attempts, putting three on target while picking up his sixth goal of his senior season in the 40th-minute. Fulton looked to break the scoreless tie four minutes earlier at the 36-minute mark, sending a shot from 22-yards out that hit the bottom of the crossbar before bouncing directly down near the goal line but was ruled no goal. The forward followed with a successful attempt from 16-yards out on a give-and-go with Davis Smith, who picked up the assist after Fulton found the bottom right corner of goal.
The UMass offensive attack looked to pick up their second goal 14 minutes into the second half as the Minutemen fired three shots on target in a two-minute span that were all saved by Dayton's Jack Steele.
Dayton scored the equalizer in the 71st-minute on a goal from Elias Harryson to tie it up at 1-1 to eventually send the game to overtime as the Minutemen pressured late with a Gorich corner for a Smith header that sailed wide right.
The Minutemen held Dayton without a single shot in the first overtime period while putting one of three shot attempts on frame as Brandon Merklin took a crack at goal that was saved before late shots by Yosuke Hanya and Fulton went wide of target. UMass took three more shots before Dayton attempted their first in the overtime periods, scoring on their second attempt as Jacob Degler's game-winner squeaked by the defense and into the back of the net.
UMass will wrap up regular season play in 11 days when they head to Washington, D.C. to face George Washington on Oct. 31 at 2 p.m.
