Minutewomen Headed to A-10 Championship Game

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts softball (28-23) defeated Saint Joseph's (25-18), 2-0, in the Atlantic 10 Championship elimination game Saturday night.
The Minutewomen will play in the league title game on Sunday for the first time since 2012. Massachusetts will face Fordham (44-14) at 1 p.m. on Sunday at the George Mason Softball Complex. UMass' 28 victories in 2017 are the most in a season since 2012 (38-13) and the most for head coach Kristi Stefanoni.
Junior Meg Colleran, now 19-13 on the season, threw a complete game shutout against the Hawks, her third victory over SJU this season. She struck out three batters and allowed just three hits.
UMass tacked on the only two runs of the game in the bottom of the fifth. Sophomore Melissa Garcia singled to the shortstop and freshman Candace Denis' sacrifice bunt moved her to second. Sophomore Erin Stacevicz singled to left field, advanced to second and moved Garcia to third. Sophomore Kaitlyn Stavinoha hit a ground ball to shortstop but reached based on an error. Heads-up base running by Garcia and Stacevicz plated two runs.
Earlier in the day, the Minutewomen fell to Fordham, 6-2, to move to the elimination bracket. Colleran made the start and pitched five innings, giving up nine hits and five earned runs. Freshman Quinn Breidenbach pitched the bottom of the sixth, giving up one hit and one earned run. UMass left seven runners on base.
The Rams struck first with an RBI double in the bottom of the first and pushed their lead to 6-0, scoring four runs in the bottom of the fourth and another in the fifth. UMass rallied for two runs on two walks, a fielder's choice and a triple from Stavinoha but were unable to close the gap.
