Minutewomen Fall in Extras at A-10 Championship

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts softball (29-24) battled Fordham (45-15) to a 2-1 decision in nine innings at the Atlantic 10 Championship on Sunday. In eight innings, the Minutewomen took a 3-2 victory from the Rams in game one, forcing a second contest. The Rams took the title in game two, 2-1 (9).
Junior Meg Colleran was nothing short of stellar, pitching 16.1 innings over five hours. She was named the Championship's Most Outstanding Player, striking out seven Fordham batters while allowing only four earned runs. She concludes the season with a 20-14 record, throwing 22 complete games with an ERA of 2.60.
Colleran, senior Jena Cozza and freshman Candace Denis were named Atlantic 10 All-Championship selections. Cozza was a force at third base Sunday, single-handedly shutting down the Fordham offense in the bottom of the eighth inning in game one. In total, she had nine assists and five putouts. She went 3-for-5 in game two, scoring UMass' lone run of the game in the top of the first thanks to heads-up base running.
As the designated hitter, Denis went 2-for-3 in game one and drove in the game-winning run. She closes the season with a .296 batting average and successfully stealing 25 of 28 attempted bases. Denis ranks tied for fifth for stolen bases in a season, matching Candice Molinari's mark from 2006, and leads all-time UMass freshmen.
