Softball Sweeps Doubleheader at URI

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts softball (17-17, 6-2 Atlantic 10) picked up two wins at Rhode Island (6-24, 3-8 A-10) on Wednesday, April 12. Junior Meg Colleran and freshman Candace Denis earned wins in the circle for the Minutewomen.
Game One
UMass defeated Rhode Island, 9-5 in nine innings, in game one. The Minutewomen collected runs from sophomores Kaycee Carbone and Erin Stacevicz and freshmen Candace Denis and Kate Dennis in the ninth to take the victory.
Colleran started on the mound and pitched a full nine innings, earning her ninth win of the season. She struck out five batters, giving up 12 hits and five runs.
The Minutewomen picked up 13 hits over the course of the nine innings. Stacevicz led UMass' offense, going three-for-five with one RBI and two runs scored. Carbone went two-for-three at the plate with one RBI and two runs scored. Senior Tara Klee and Dennis also collected extra-base hits.
Game Two
Denis earned her seventh win of the season and paced the Minutewomen to a 5-3 victory in game two. She threw a complete seven-inning game, giving up five hits and striking out eight batters.
Klee and senior Ashton Wince both went two-for-three at the plate, leading the offensive efforts. Klee drove in three runs and Wince picked up two RBI, accounting for all five of the Minutewomen's runs scored.
Stacevicz, senior Jena Cozza, Denis, Dennis and freshmen Nicole Imhof, each reached with singles. Cozza, Carbone and Garcia scored UMass' runs.
Coming a split result doubleheader at Lehigh, UMass will host Fordham in a three-game series Friday and Saturday. At Sortino Field, game times are set for 3 p.m. Friday and 12 and 2 p.m. Saturday.
