Minutewomen Split DH With GW Saturday

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts softball opened Atlantic 10 play with a double header split against George Washington on Saturday. The Minutewomen (11-15, 1-1 A-10) and the Colonials (14-15, 1-4 A-10) will conclude the series at 12 p.m. Sunday.
Game One
UMass fell 4-1 to George Washington in their first game of the series. Freshman Candace Denis started on the mound and pitched seven innings, striking out five batters and giving up four hits and four earned runs.
Sophomore Kaitlyn Stavinoha drove in freshman Kate Dennis with an RBI-single for the only run of the game. Freshman Nicole Imhof led the Minutewomen's offense and went two-for-three. UMass picked up four singles by Denis, sophomore Kaycee Carbone and seniors Ashton Wince and Tara Klee.
Game Two
The Minutewomen fought back and bested the Colonials, 4-0, in game two of the doubleheader. Junior Meg Colleran started in the circle and pitched a complete game shut-out, striking out four batters and allowing only four hits.
Sophomore Erin Stacevicz had a stellar performance at the plate and went four-for-four with an RBI and two runs scored. Carbone picked up two hits and drove in two of the four UMass runs. Sophomore Melissa Garcia and Denis both hit singles during the game.
