Women's Lax Draws Up 19-8 Win Over VCU

Hannah Murphy sets school record with 18 draw controls in A-10 opening win.

AMHERST, Mass. - Hannah Murphy set a new school record with 18 draw controls, tied as the eighth most for a game in NCAA history, as the UMass women's lacrosse team opened its Atlantic 10 schedule with a 19-8 win over VCU at Garber Field on Thursday night. The Minutewomen scored nine straight goals to start the game en route to their 46th consecutive A-10 regular-season win which extended their NCAA record.

Overall for the game, UMass (6-3, 1-0 A-10) won 24-of-29 draw controls which led to a heavy time of possession and the quick start. The season-high 19 goals came on just 37 shots.

In addition to her 18 draw controls, Murphy finished the day with two goals, an assist, and three groundballs. The senior All-American broke her previous UMass record of 14 draws which she set last April. She is now tied with Jessica Karwacki of Robert Morris (2015) and Kaylin Morissette of Louisville (2015) for eighth. 

Hannah Burnett led all scorers with seven points on four goals and a career-high three assists. The redshirt junior now has 19 of her 22 goals this year over the last five games. Callie Santos also matched Burnett with a game-high four goals, while Kiley Anderson had three. Kaitlyn Cerasi had a pair of goals and a season-high three assists, while Holly Turner had two goals and two assists along with two groundballs and two caused turnovers. 

Defensively, Kasey Keane had a career-high three caused turnovers along with two groundballs. Lauren Hiller earned the win in cage making four saves during the first half of play. She was lifted in the second half by Aileen Kelly who made three saves in the second half.

VCU (4-5, 0-1 A-10) was led by three goals from Keriann McTavish, while Molly Barcikowski added a goal and an assist. Five other Rams netted goals in the game.Ria Peralta took the loss in cage making 11 saves.

The Minutewomen jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the first 16 minutes of play. The Rams finally got on the board at the 10:49 mark of the first half before adding a second 22 seconds later. Murphy scored on a free position shot with 52 seconds left in the first half putting UMass up 14-6 at the intermission.

UMass jumped out of the gates quickly to start the second half scoring four straight in the opening six minutes of the stanza. Anderson's final goal of the day put UMass up 19-6 with 11:46 left in regulation. The Rams tacked on two more scores in the final seven minutes of play to give the final score.
