Women's Lax Hosts VCU, St. Joe's to Open A-10 Play

March 29, 2017 | Women's Lacrosse

Minutewomen enter A-10 play with NCAA-record 45-game league win streak.

AMHERST, Mass. - It's the start of Atlantic 10 action for the UMass women's lacrosse team as the Minutewomen host VCU and Saint Joseph's at Garber Field this Thursday and Sunday. The A-10 opener against the Rams will now be held on Thursday, March 30 at 5 p.m. due to impending inclement weather forecast on the originally scheduled date of Friday. UMass will then host the Hawks on Sunday, April 2 at 1 p.m. Both games will be carried live on the Atlantic 10 Digital Network. Admission is free to all.

UMass (5-3) is riding a NCAA-record 45-game regular-season league win streak into the start of the 2017 campaign. The Minutewomen have not lost an Atlantic 10 game since the regular-season finale against La Salle on April 18, 2010. Entering this year's preseason, UMass was picked as the league favorite to defend its eight consecutive conference titles. In addition to the regular-season win streak, UMass was won 14 consecutive A-10 Tournament games.

Holly Turner continues to lead the Minutewomen with 26 points on 12 goals and 14 assists followed closely by Hannah Murphy who has 22 points on 15 goals and seven assists. Murphy also leads the Minutewomen in draw controls this year with 53 total.

The hot hand on offense lately continues to be Hannah Burnett who has 15 of her 18 goals this season in the last four games. Burnett was named the A-10 Player of the Week after netting six goals in last week's wins at Harvard and at home over Marist.

Defensively, Sarah Crowley has been a force on defense and in transition with a team-high 21 caused turnovers and 26 groundballs. In the win over Marist, she tied the UMass single-game record with six caused turnovers while adding six groundballs as well. In cage, Lauren Hiller has been solid in her rookie campaign with a 10.95 goals-against-average and a 0.473 save percentage as the goalie of record.

Nationally, Crowley, Hiller, and Murphy all rank among the NCAA's top 20 entering the week. Crowley moved up to seventh in the country in caused turnovers per game (2.63), while Murphy ranks fifth in draw controls (6.63/game). Hiller's 9.88 saves per game is good for 19th-best in the nation.

Murphy also enters the weekend as the nation's active leader in career draw controls (363) which is two shy of moving her into eighth all-time in the history of the NCAA. Hayley Krause of Winthrop posted 365 between 2013-16 while Ana White would be the next milestone marker at No. 7 all-time (398, 2011-14).

UMass and VCU met for the first time last year with the Minutewomen winning in Richmond. In the series with the Hawks, UMass is 22-3 all-time since first playing in 1994. Saint Joseph's last defeated the Minutewomen in 2005. The two teams met in the A-10 semifinals last season with UMass picking up a 13-8 win.

The Rams enter A-10 play with a 4-4 record following a 21-12 win over Liberty. Kerian McTavish leads the squad with 32 points on 17 goals and 15 assists. Molly Barcikowski has a team-high 21 goals and eight assists, while Sky Hyatt is just behind with 17 goals and nine assists. Ria Peralta is the goalie of record with a 12.82 goals-against-average and a 0.466 save percentage.

The Hawks also enter the weekend with a 4-4 record and will host Davidson in Philly before traveling to UMass. Saint Joseph's has a pair of 30-point scorers in Nora McCallion (19g, 11a) and Rebecca Lane (16g, 14a), while Hope Anhut leads the team with 23 goals. Amelia Deibler has started the last six games for the Hawks with a 12.67 goals-against-average and a 0.420 save percentage.
