Crowley, Walker Lead Women's Lax Past Marist 10-7

March 25, 2017 | Women's Lacrosse

Crowley ties single-game record with 6 caused turnovers, Walker scores three goals.

AMHERST, Mass. - A five-goal run in the second half along with stingy defense keyed the UMass women's lacrosse team in a 10-7 win over Marist on Saturday afternoon at Garber Field. The Minutewomen held the Red Foxes scoreless for the final 19 minutes of play while stringing together the five straight goals in the non-conference finale win.

The Minutewomen will begin Atlantic 10 action next weekend after finishing out of league play with a 5-3 record. Marist fell for the second straight game dropping to 4-5 on the year.

UMass was led offensively by a career-high three goals from Abby Walker and two from Hannah Burnett. Five other Minutewomen tallied goals while Stephanie Croke had her first career points with two assists. Defensively, Sarah Crowley tied a UMass single-game record with six caused turnovers to go with six groundballs and three draw controls. Crowley's six forced turnovers tied Jackie Nesbitt who did the same against St. Bonaventure on April 7, 2006.

Marist was led by Morgan Jaycox and Hailey Wagner who each had a pair of goals. Abigail Witczak made 18 saves in cage for the Red Foxes helping keep the game close throughout.

The Minutewomen started the game with a four-goal run capped by a goal from Hannah Murphy at the 13:44 mark. While the Red Foxes were able to win the first four draws of the game, UMass was able to force turnovers on defense and the ride to build out the lead.

Marist settled into the game after Wagner's first goal of the day put the Red Foxes on the scoreboard at the 11:55 mark. In just under a four minute span, Marist was able to tie the game with three more goals. In the final minute of play in the first half, UMass was hit with Murphy's second yellow cared of the game forcing the All-American to sit for the remainder of the game. That also put Marist up a man to start the second half after going into intermission tied 4-4.

Holly Turner quickly broke the tie with a man-down goal just over a minute into the second half. The lead was short lived, however, as Marist rattled off three straight goals taking a 7-5 lead on a free-position score by Samantha Mehalick.

With Kiley Anderson moved into the draw circle, Santos was able to corral five draw controls in the second half which helped spur a five goal-run for the Minutewomen. Walker scored on back-to-back plays thanks to nifty passing from Croke to tie the game with 16:30 remaining. Two minutes later, Cassidy Doster netted an unassisted goal which served as the game-winner. Santos scored on an emphatic crease roll two minutes after that before Burnett closed out the scoring at the 11:17 mark.

For the game, UMass outshot Marist 35-to-18 and held a 26-to-9 edge in groundballs. The Red Foxes won 5-of-9 first half draws before the Minutewomen were able to win 8-of-10 in the second half.

The defensive ride of UMass was the biggest difference maker in the game as the Minutewomen limited Marist to just 13-of-24 on clear attempts while going 16-of-16 themselves. Special teams also figured prominently with the Minutewomen killing off 4-of-5 Marist man-up opportunities while also scoring the one man-down goal.
