Three-Run Seventh Puts Saint Francis Past UMass

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts softball suffered a close 5-4 loss to Saint Francis in its final game of the Baylor Invitational on Sunday.
Freshman Candace Denis started on the mound and pitched 6.0 innings, striking out seven batters, giving up four hits and three earned runs. Junior Meg Colleran was substituted in for Denis in the seventh and pitched 0.2 innings, giving up one hit and two earned runs.
The game remained scoreless until the top of the third when the Minutewomen's bats came alive, putting four runs on the board. Three consecutive singles by freshman Madison Gimpl, sophomore Erin Stacevicz and Denis loaded the bases for sophomore Kaitlyn Stavinoha, who blasted a grand slam over the right field fence.
In the bottom of the fifth, Saint Francis closed the gap and posted two runs, cutting the UMass lead to two. The Red Flash managed to string together three hits in the bottom of the seventh, scoring three runs and ending the game.
UMass will play at the Bulldog Slamboree, March 3-5, in Starkville, Mississippi. On Friday, the squad will face off against Central Arkansas at 10 a.m. and Mississippi State at 5:30 p.m.
