CAA Partners With Lax Sports Network For "Game Of The Week" Series
The Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) and the Lacrosse Sports Network (LSN) struck up a partnership to digitally stream 15 contests during the 2017 regular season in a "Game of the Week" series. Massachusetts will participate in two of those contests during home games against Fairfield (4/15) and Drexel (4/28). Those two contests will be available to watch exclusively through LSN's platform.
New To The Starting Crew
UMass featured five first time starters during the season opener, including defensemen Dan O'Brien and Luc Valenza, first line midfielders Ben Spencer and Jeffrey Trainor and attackman Nick Roy. O'Brien, Roy and Trainor are freshmen, Spencer is in his sophomore season and Valenza is a junior.
First Timers
Five Minutemen played in their first collegiate lacrosse game during the season-opener against Army. The list included Dan O'Brien (D), Nick Roy (A), Devin Spencer (A), Jackson Suboch (D) and Jeffrey Trainor (M). Mike McDonough (LSM) played in his first Division I game as the sophomore spent the 2016 season at Saint Leo University, an NCAA Division II institution in Saint Leo, Fla.
CAA Recognizes Paparo, Weeks
Two members of the UMass men's lacrosse program collected 2017 CAA Preseason All-Conference in Isaac Paparo and Tyler Weeks. Paparo, a 2016 All-CAA Second Team honoree at long-stick midfielder, collected 27 groundballs and caused six turnovers as a rookie last season. Weeks split time between close defense and long-stick midfield before a season-ending injury at Penn State cut short his junior year. Both took spots at CAA Preseason All-Conference Honorable Mention.
Ted Garber Joins National Lacrosse Hall Of Fame Chapter
Former UMass men's lacrosse head coach Ted Garber were inducted into the Western Massachusetts Chapter of the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame on Jan. 11, 2017. Garber, the son of legendary University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse former head coach Dick Garber, led the Minutemen as head coach of the program from 1991-94 during which UMass won 37 games and advanced to a pair of NCAA Tournaments in 1991 and 1993 while the squad won the New England Championship in 1993.
McAleavey Named To UMass Athletics Hall Of Fame
University of Massachusetts Department of Athletics announced the five new members inducted into the George "Trigger" Burke UMass Athletics Hall of Fame as the Class of 2016, including former UMass men's lacrosse standout Jim McAleavey. McAleavey currently ranks second all-time for points scored on the strength of 95 goals and a program-record 171 assists. A standout from his freshman year onward, McAleavey produced at least 49 points in each of his four campaigns while he provided the second-best single-season points total in UMass history with 91 via 34 goals and 57 assists in 1990.
Lauded for his on-field accomplishments, McAleavey took home three USILA All-America honors and four NEILA All-Region awards at attack while he also represented Massachusetts in the 1991 USILA North/South All-Star Game. He led the squad in points and assists in each of his four season (1988-91) and his 171 career helpers are 30 more than the next Minuteman.
Paparo A Work Horse Out Of The Gate
Then-freshman Isaac Paparo provided an immediate boost at long-stick midfielder with 27 groundballs, six caused turnovers and five points (two goals, three assists). It is the most points by a long-stick midfielder since Jake Deane (seven goals, two assists) in 2006 and the greatest number of groundballs and caused turnovers by a rookie LSM since Austin Spencer had 22 and 10 in 2014.
Paparo started his sophomore season with two groundballs and a pair of caused turnovers vs. Army.
Carr Found Next Scoring Gear Driving Offense
Buddy Carr notched 10 points on six goals and four assists during 15 appearances as a freshman in 2015. Over the course of his 13-game sophomore season, Carr provided a team-high 26 points via 18 goals and eight assists.
Carr posted a single game career high of five points (four goals, one assist) in the upset of No. 11 Ohio State. It was one of five games with three or more points by the then-sophomore attackman.
Hats Off To These Minutemen
Four current Minutemen own at least one career hat trick through seven games of the 2016 season. Two Minutemen collected their first hat tricks on Feb. 20, 2016 against No. 11 Ohio State in Gianni Bianchin and Buddy Carr, while Carr has since added one each against No. 14 Harvard (Feb. 27) and No. 20 Penn State (March 19). Tyler Bogart etched his name onto the hat trick list when he scored three goals during the upset of No. 10 North Carolina (March 12). Dan Muller previously put his name in the ledger with three goals against Drexel on April 18, 2015.
