Men’s Soccer Set For Final Road Match At George Mason

October 27, 2017 | Men's Soccer

George Mason UMass takes a 10-match unbeaten streak into Fairfax, Va. with a chance to secure an A-10 quarterfinal host bid.

AMHERST, Mass. The 25th-ranked University of Massachusetts men's soccer team will hit the road for the final time in the regular season on Saturday when they travel to Fairfax, Va. for an Atlantic 10 matchup against George Mason. The Minutemen (11-2-3 Overall, 5-0-1 A-10) head into the weekend on a 10-match unbeaten streak as they entered the latest top-25 in the United Soccer Coaches poll for the first time since the 2008 season.

A win over George Mason (5-7-2 Overall, 0-5-1 A-10) would clinch a top-four spot in the A-10 for the Minutemen, allowing them to play host to an opponent in the conference tournament quarterfinals on Nov. 5 at Rudd Field. The all-time series between the Minutemen and the Patriots is tied at 1-1 with both teams meeting last in 2013 at George Mason Stadium.

UMass picked up a pair of key league wins last week, defeating then tied for first-place Rhode Island 2-1 at home last Wednesday to move to 9-0-1 at Rudd Field before going on the road to pick up a 3-2 win at second-place Dayton on Saturday.

Both the offense and defense have achieved success for the Minutemen this season as UMass is outscoring their opponents 32-15 on the year, averaging 2.00 goals per game while surrendering just 0.94 goals per contest. UMass has been making the most of their chances at net, firing 91 shots on goal for a .481 shots on goal percentage.

Davis Smith leads the Minutemen offense with eight goals and four assists for 20 points while Alex DeSantis has added six goals for 16 points. DeSantis converted on a penalty kick in the 83rd-minute on Saturday against Dayton to put UMass ahead on their way to the road win.

Goalkeeper Bardia Asefnia anchors a UMass defense that has allowed nine goals during the unbeaten streak while the offense has picked up 26 goals. On the year, Asefnia is holding opponents to a 0.91 goals against average while picking up 49 saves and three solo shutouts.

The Minutemen will return home for their final regular season contest on Wed., Nov. 1 against Fordham at 2 p.m. for Senior Day.
