Men’s Soccer Extends Unbeaten Streak To 11, Defeats George Mason On Road 4-1

UMass secured a host spot for the A-10 quarterfinals with the win.
FAIRFAX, Va. –University of Massachusetts men's soccer team secured a top-four spot in the Atlantic 10 standings and a host spot for the conference tournament quarterfinals on Nov. 5 as they defeated George Mason 4-1 on the road Saturday evening at George Mason Stadium. The Minutemen (12-2-3 Overall, 6-0-1 A-10) extended their unbeaten streak to 11 straight matches as they remained on the top of the conference standings after the win.
The UMass attack fired 10 of their 14 shots on goal while George Mason (5-8-2 Overall, 0-6-1 A-10) attempted 12 and put six on goal. Bardia Asefnia tallied five saves in net for the Minutemen to move his season saves number up to 54.
Davis Smith opened up the scoring for the Minutemen in the 23rd minute, picking up his ninth goal of the year on a header off an assist from Alex DeSantis. Smith currently leads UMass in goals this season and points with 23.
DeSantis would get in on the scoring action himself just 13 minutes later with his seventh goal this season, putting a shot into the right side of the net from about eight yards out to put the Minutemen ahead 2-0 on Samuel Asamoah's first assist.
Matthew Mooney scored his first goal of his senior campaign in the early moments of the second half, converting on a Smith cross and sending it into the left corner of the net to extend the lead to three.
Michael Rita all but put the game out of reach in the 71st minute, scoring from 10 yards out after a Jack Fulton free kick for his second career goal.
George Mason's Henning Dirks put in the lone goal for the Patriots late in the contest, scoring on a penalty kick in the 86th minute to bring the score to a final 4-1.
The Minutemen will play their final match of the regular season on Wednesday, Nov. 1 as they play host to Fordham at 2 p.m. for Senior Day at Rudd Field. UMass will remain home after the Wednesday contest to host the quarterfinal match of the A-10 Conference Tournament on Sunday, Nov. 5 with a time and opponent to be determined.
