WASHINGTON, D.C. - Sophomore pitcher Meg Colleran threw her second complete-game shutout of the Atlantic 10 Championship as University of Massachusetts softball topped the University of Dayton, 5-0, on Friday at the GW Softball Field in Washington, D.C.
Colleran (22-15) earned the win in the circle for UMass as she struck out six batters and only allowed one runner to reach third base in the victory. It marked her third consecutive complete game performance against the Flyers lineup as Colleran has limited Dayton to only one run in 19.0 innings pitched against the squad this season.
Jena Cozza collected a hit in each of her three at bats on the day and scored once. Lindsey Zenk added a 2-for-3 effort, which included a two-run single while she also walked once. Taylor Carbone was 1-of-3, scored twice, drove in one baserunner and also drew a walk.
Gabrielle Snyder (8-2) suffered the loss as she allowed four runs over 3.1 innings pitched. Emily Froment followed with 3.2 innings of relief, during which she gave up the final UMass run. Kathryn Hess went 2-of-3 at the plate as the only Flyer with multiple hits.
UMass produced three runs in the opening frame. Cozza laced a one-out single into center field and moved to second on her ninth stolen base of the season. Taylor Carbone followed with an RBI single up the middle. With two outs, Kaycee Carbone reached on a throwing error. The sisters scored when Zenk singled into right-center field and gave UMass a three-run lead.
Following two scoreless frames, the Minutewomen grabbed two more runs. Erin Stacevicz scored on a wild pitch after she reached base via walk drawn through a 10-pitch at bat. Kaycee Carbone plated her sister later in the inning when she lofted a single into center field for the 5-0 advantage.
UMass (26-22 overall) advances to take on Saint Joseph's (24-24-1) on Saturday in the semifinal of the A-10 Championship. The game is set for a 10:30 a.m. start and can be watched on the American Sports Network and the Atlantic 10 Digital Network, free-of-charge.
