Minutewomen Fall to Hawks in A-10 Semifinal, 5-2

WASHINGTON, D.C. - A fifth-inning grand slam from Saint Joseph's senior Brandi Harkness helped lift the Hawks over UMass, 5-2, in the first of two games for the Minutewomen on Saturday at the George Washington Softball Field in Washington, D.C.
The outfield pair of Erin Stacevicz and Kaycee Carbone each had 2-for-3 days for UMass, while redshirt sophomore Jena Cozza and junior Ashton Wince each tallied an RBI.
The Hawks grabbed a run in the first inning, when senior shortstop Sarah Yoos delivered a two-out solo home run to center field.
Massachusetts answered in the home half, when redshirt sophomore Jena Cozza laced a double into right-center field that scored Stacevicz from first on the play.
The teams exchanged zeroes up until the fifth inning, when Harkness swatted her grand slam over the left field scoreboard to put the Hawks up, 5-1.
The Minutewomen answered back with a run in the sixth inning. Carbone singled to start the inning and moved up to second base when senior Lindsey Zenk grounded out. With two outs, Wince delivered an RBI single up the middle to score Carbone and helped close the Hawks lead to 5-2.
Sophomore Meg Colleran (22-16) was pegged with the loss in the game. The pitcher threw 4.2 innings, allowing eight hits and just one earned run. She struck out two batters in the game.
The Minutewomen are back in action on Sunday as they take on No. 1 seed Fordham in the consolation bracket at 9 a.m. The game will be broadcast on the Atlantic 10 Digital Network, free-of-charge. The winner of that game will advance to take on Saint Joseph's in the Atlantic 10 Championship game.
