Minutewomen Split Doubleheader With Hawks

AMHERST, Mass. - University of Massachusetts softball split Saturday’s doubleheader with Saint Joseph’s. The Minutewomen won the first game in walkoff fashion, 2-1, but fell to the Hawks in game two by a 7-1 score at Sortino Field in Amherst, Mass. UMass moves to 10-19 with a 4-3 mark in Atlantic 10 play, while Saint Joseph’s goes to 13-15-1 and 4-5-1 in the conference.

Game One

Junior Ashton Wince delivered a walk-off RBI single to right field to help UMass come back and take the opening game of Saturday’s doubleheader, 2-1.

The game was scoreless heading in to extra innings, but Saint Joseph’s scored to take a run advantage in the top of the eighth inning. Sarah Yoos singled into left field to score Kaylyn Zierke from second base.

The Minutewomen answered back in the home half. Junior Tara Klee doubled to lead the inning off for Head Coach Kristi Stefanoni’s team. Senior Lindsey Zenk followed by reaching on an error and was replaced by pinch-runner freshman Dana Barclay.

Freshman Kaycee Carbone singled up the middle into center field to score Klee to tie the game. Barclay got held up between second and third and was ruled out in a rundown, but bought enough time for Carbone to move into second. Senior Olivia Godin singled to follow, which set up Wince’s walkoff.

Sophomore Meg Colleran earned the win in the circle for UMass. The pitcher threw eight innings and allowed just one run while striking out five.

Game Two

A three-run home run by Zierke in the third inning helped the Hawks take the second game of the doubleheader, topping the Minutewomen 7-1.

Zierke’s blast cleared the scoreboard in left field and put the Hawks up 4-0. Saint Joseph’s scored in the first inning when Zierke singled in to right field and scored Amanda Kulp.

In the bottom of the sxith, UMass got a run back to make the game 4-1. Klee delivered a blast off the left-field foul pole for her first home run of the season.

The Hawks added three more runs in the seventh inning. Yoos doubled to center field to bring in a run. Hannah Dionne delivered a pinch-hit to score another run, and Yoos scored on an error from the left fielder.

Colleran (9-12) threw the first four innings of the game. She allowed three earned runs and struck out a batter. Senior Taylor Carbone came in relief in the fifth inning and allowed two earned runs over three innings of work.

The teams will meet again tomorrow for the rubber game of the series. First pitch is at 2 p.m.
