Godin Helps Lift Minutewomen Over Bonnies, 5-4

OLEAN, N.Y. - Senior Olivia Godin singled with two outs in the ninth inning to help lift the University of Massachusetts softball team over St. Bonaventure, 5-4, in extra innings on Joyce Field, in Olean, N.Y., on Sunday afternoon.
The Minutewomen (14-21, 8-5 A-10) fell behind in the first inning when the Bonnies (9-24, 4-9 A-10) grabbed a run early. Desiree Gonzalez had an infield single to score Emily McDonough from third base.
UMass grabbed two runs back in the second inning to take the lead. Freshman Kaitlyn Stavinoha tripled down the right field line and scored classmate Kaycee Carbone, who singled earlier in the inning. Stavinoha scored when senior Whitney Cooper singled to left field to give the Minutewomen the lead.
UMass scored in the third and fourth innings to help build its lead to three runs. Redshirt sophomore Jena Cozza singled to lead off the third and stole second to get into scoring position. Senior Taylor Carbone singled up the middle and scored Cozza from second.
The fourth inning saw junior Tara Klee plate freshman Erin Stacevicz, who singled to left field with one out.
The Bonnies scored a run in the sixth and tied the game in the seventh. Alissa Karjel plated a run with a single to centerfield to tie the game. The teams exchanged zeroes in the eighth inning before UMass took the game in the ninth with Godin’s single.
Sophomore pitcher Meg Colleran (12-14) earned the win and threw all nine innings in the circle for UMass. The pitcher allowed 11 hits and struck out six, allowing just three earned runs in the game.
The Minutewomen are back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Storrs, Conn. to take on the Connecticut Huskies. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
